Parking Pawl: Service and Repair
Required special tools and equipment:
^ VW 222 A Drift
^ VW 228 B Puller
^ VW 423 Tube
^ VW 460/2 Mandrel
Note:
The output gear must be removed to disassemble and assemble the parking lock.
1 Bolt, 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.)
2 Manual selector valve control
3 Selector shaft with selector segment

4 Spring pin
^ Driving out and in refer to Fig. 1
5 Engaging lever Insert together with selector shaft and detent segment
6 Detent segment
^ Insert together with selector shaft and engaging lever
7 Lock washer
8 Bolt, 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
9 Spring for selector segment
10 Bolt, 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
11 O-ring
^ Always replace
^ Only install on shafts with groove for circlip
12 Washer
13 Shaft for detent lever
^ Secured by circlip and bearing cap of drive pinion
14 Return spring
15 Detent lever

^ Rounded side faces teeth of drive pinion

^ It is not necessary to remove drive gear to disassemble parking lock

^ Insert with 1 pin each resting on slope of detent segment
^ Tested in vehicle by On Board Diagnostic (OBD).

^ For multi-function switch
24 Bolt, 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
25 Mounting bushing
^ Removing refer to Fig. 5
^ Installing refer to Fig. 6
26 O-ring
^ Always replace
27 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G68- Tested by On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
28 Bolt, 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
29 O-ring
^ Always replace
30 Transmission Speed Sensor (VSS) -G38-
^ Tested by On Board Diagnostics.
31 Bolt, 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
32 Retainer
^ For wire to Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G68-
^ Secure with bolt -item 31 -
33 Retaining clip
^ For wire to VSS
34 Lever
^ For selector shaft
35 Bolt, 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
36 O-ring
^ Pry out with screwdriver
^ Drive in flush with VW 423
37 Breather cap
38 Breather
39 Breather pipe
^ Remove using pliers
^ Drive to stop with drift VW 460/2

Driving out
^ Only drive out spring pin for engaging lever and spring pin for detent segment far enough to remove selector shaft.
CAUTION!
Driving out pin from engaging lever further may cause it to drop into the planetary gears.
Driving in
^ Drive in spring pins until flush after inserting selector shaft, engaging lever and detent segment.

CAUTION!
Be careful not to damage conductor strip with valve body installed.
^ Remove selector segment spring -A-.
^ Remove screw with washer -arrow-
Washer prevents selector shaft from moving.
