ATF level, checking
Requirements
- Transmission must not be in emergency running mode
- Vehicle level
- Selector lever in position "P", engine running at idling speed
- Air conditioning system and heater switched off
- Vehicle Diagnosis and Information System VAS 5051 connected] vehicle self-diagnosis and vehicle system "02 -transmission electronics" selected
- The ATF temperature must not be more than approx. 30°C at the start of this procedure. The transmission must be allowed to cool first if necessary.
Note:
^ The ATF temperature is read by the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051.
^ The ATF level changes as the ATF temperature changes.
^ Checking the ATF level when the ATF temperature is too low leads to overfilling..
^ Checking the ATF level when the ATF temperature is too high leads to under filling.
^ An overfilled under filled transmission will affect the function of the transmission.
^ Only ATF available through the parts system may be used in automatic transmission 09G. Other ATF can lead to the transmission malfunctioning or failing.
Reading ATF temperature
Shown on VAS 5051:
- Enter diagnosis function "08. Read measured value (data) block" in selection -1 -
Shown on VAS 5051:
1. Enter display group (max value = 255)
- Enter "6" using key pad for "Display group number 6" and confirm entry with Q key.
Shown on VAS 5051:
- Read ATF temperature in display zone -1-.
Checking ATF level
Note:
^ The ATF level is checked at the ATF control plug.
^ The ATF level is correct when ATF leaks slowly out of the opening when the ATF temperature is between 35° and 45°C Endue to the expansion of the fluid when heated).
1) 50°C for hot climates
- Fill with ATF using ATF charging system VAG 1924.
Note: The ATF charging system must be clean and the ATF must not be mixed with other ATF oils
- Secure reservoir of ATF charging system VAG 1924 to vehicle.
- Drive vehicle onto a four-post hoist or over an assembly pit so that vehicle is absolutely level.
- Remove sound insulation (arrows).
- Place drip tray VAG 1306 underneath transmission. - Start engine and run at idling speed.
WARNING: Wear eye protection.
- Remove ATF control plug (arrow -1-) when ATF temperature reaches 35°C.
Note: Always replace ATF control plug seal (arrow).
At first the ATF present in the overflow pipe (arrow -2-) runs out.
If ATF continues to leak out of the ATF control pipe opening before the ATF temperature has reached 45°C, the ATF level is OK.
- Tighten ATF control plug (arrow -1-) (installed with a new seal) to 27 Nm. This completes ATF check.
Note: The ATF control plug must be reinstalled at the latest before the temperature reaches 45°C.
1) 50°C for hot climates
If no ATF leaks out before ATF temperature reaches 45°C, top up ATF.
- End function "08. Read measured value (data) block" by touching key -
- Press key for function "06. End output".
- Switch ignition off and disconnect Data Link Connector (DLC).
ATF, topping off
If no ATF leaks out of overflow pipe (arrow -2-) before ATF temperature reaches 40°C, the ATF must be topped off.
Note: The ATF control plug must be reinstalled at the latest before the temperature reaches 45°C. If necessary, switch off the engine, allow the transmission to cool down and repeat the check.
1) 50°C for hot climates
WARNING:
^ When working in the vicinity of the radiator ensure sufficient clearance is left to the radiator coolant fan.
^ Radiator coolant fan can switch on without prior warning.
- Pry off plug securing cap (arrow) with a screwdriver.
Note: The cap locking device will be damaged when removing the cap, therefore always replace the cap
- Pull plug out of filler pipe.
- Fill with ATF using VAG 1924 until ATF runs out of control hole.
CAUTION! An insufficient filling with ATF as well as filling to excess affects the function of the transmission.
- Tighten ATF control plug (arrow -1-) (installed with a new seal) to 27 Nm. This completes ATF topping off procedure.
Note: The ATF control plug must be reinstalled at the latest before the temperature reaches 45°C. If necessary, allow the transmission to cool down and repeat the check.
1) 50°C for hot climates
- Switch ignition off.
- Install plug to filler pipe and secure with a new cap (arrow).
- Lock cap.
CAUTION! Always replace cap. The cap secures the sealing plug.
- End function "08. Read measured value (data) block" by pressing key At.
- Press key for function "06. End output".
- Switch ignition off and disconnect Data Link Connector (DLC).
- Install sound insulation.
