Wheel bearing and wheel hub unit (vehicles with rear disc brakes), removing and installing
Special tools and equipment
^ VW 637/2 Grease cap puller
^ 3241/4 Seal installer
^ 3420 Assembly tool
^ VAG 1332 Torque wrench
^ VAG 1410 Torque wrench

Loosen dust cap from seat by tapping lightly on claw.

- Counter-hold on guide pins and remove securing bolts from brake caliper.
- Remove brake caliper and hang up on body.
CAUTION:
^ Suspend brake caliper using a piece of wire or similar.
^ Do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose. The unsupported weight can stretch and damage the hose.
- Remove Phillips-head screw from brake disc and remove brake disc.
- Remove 12-point nut.

A - Puller, e.g. Kukko 20/2

Only use puller with a tightening clamp -A-, (e.g. Kukko 204-2) (commercially type).

- Install wheel bearing/hub unit as far as possible onto stub axle.
- Install assembly tool 3420 and pull wheel bearing/wheel hub unit on to limit stop.
- Remove assembly tool 3420.

- Install new 12-point nut -A- and tighten it to 175 Nm (129 ft. lbs.).
- Install brake disc.

Notes:
^ Always replace dust cap.
^ Damaged (dented) dust caps allow moisture contamination, therefore always use the tool illustrated.
Installation is the reverse of removal.
Fastener/location Tightening torques
Brake caliper to rear axle 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.)
Brake disc to wheel hub 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.)
