Shock Absorber and Spring Removing and Installing


Spring/shock absorber, removing and installing

Special tools and equipment
^ VAG 1332 Torque wrench
^ VAG 1752 Spring compressor
^ VAG 1752/3 Spring retainer
^ VAG 1752/9 Adapter





Removing spring
- Insert spring compressor -1-.
- Compress the coil spring until it can be removed.
- Remove spring.

Installing spring
- Make sure zinc spacer bushing is not damaged.
- Replace if necessary.
- Install spring together with spring bearing plate.
- Release spring and take out spring compressor.
Observe installation position!





- End of the spring -arrow- must lie against the limit stop of the spring seat.

Removing shock absorber
The coil springs must be removed beforehand





- Remove bolts -1- with vehicle standing on its wheels (raise vehicle until the bolts are accessible).





- Remove shock absorber hex bolt -1- on rear axle.
For ease of illustration the work sequence is shown without the wheel.
- Remove shock absorber.
Installation is the reverse of removal.

Fastener/location Tightening torques
Shock absorber to rear axle 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) plus additional 90° turn
Use new nuts!
Load rear of vehicle with one person when tightening
Shock absorber to body 30 Nm (22.1 ft. lbs.) plus additional 90° turn
Use new bolts!
