Tie Rod, Removing and Installing


Tie rod, removing and installing





Special tools and equipment
^ VAG 1275 Pliers
^ VAG 1332 Torque wrench
^ VAG 1332/5 Open end insert, 34 mm

Removing
The tie rods can only be removed and installed with the steering gear removed.
Removing and installing power steering gear, Refer to Steering Gear, Service and Repair
- Seal line/hose connections on power assisted steering gear (if not already done).
- Clean outside of power steering gear in area of boot.
- Open hose clamps and push boot back.





- Clamp steering gear in vise and unscrew tie rod.
- To determine center position on the rack, Refer to Steering Gear, Service and Repair, Center Position on Steering Rack, Determining

Installing
Install in reverse order of removal.

Tightening torque:
Tie rod to power steering gear 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.)

Installing boot
- Check boot for wear (cuts, cracks) and make sure sealing surfaces are clean.
- Turn tie rod first so that the tie rod ball joint tapered pin is positioned and install boot.

Note:
^ Only use original equipment type clamps





- Tighten clamp using pliers VAG 1275.
- Installing power steering gear, Refer to Steering Gear, Service and Repair
