Starter Removal and Installation
CAUTION!
Disconnect the Battery (A) before working on the electrical system. Refer to => [ Battery A, Disconnecting and Connecting ] .
• Get the radio anti-theft code before disconnecting the Battery (A)
• After connecting the Battery (A), check any affected system or component (radio, clock, comfort electrical connection etc.) according to the repair information and/or the operating instructions.

Starter, 4-Cylinder Gasoline and Diesel
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (VAG 1331)
• Torque Wrench (VAG 1332)
Removing Noise Insulation (Diesel Engine)
- Install the 4 screws on the right and left sides, then the 2 screws on the back.
- Remove the noise insulation downward.
Removing Noise Insulation (Gasoline Engine)
- Remove screws - arrows -.
- Remove the noise insulation downward.
Removing Noise Insulation On Transmission Side
- Remove bolt - 2 -.
- Remove the lock washers - 1 -.
- Remove the noise insulation - 3 -.
• Do not use the lock washers again. Replace them each time the cover is removed.
• Get the radio anti-theft code before disconnecting the Battery (A)
• After connecting the Battery (A), check any affected system or component (radio, clock, comfort electrical connection etc.) according to the repair information and/or the operating instructions.
Removing
- Remove the screw - right arrow - from the power steering pressure line bracket.
- Remove Battery (A). Refer to => [ 4-Cylinder Engine, Gasoline and Diesel ] .
- Remove the screws - arrows - and remove the battery tray.
- Disconnect the connector - 1 - and remove it from the retainer.
- Disconnect the connector - 2 - from terminal 50.
- Disconnect the terminal 30 wire - 3 - on the solenoid switch.
- Remove harness from harness guide.
- Remove harness guide.
- Remove the coolant hose bracket - 1 -.
- Remove screws - arrows -.
- Remove the Starter (B).
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal.
Tightening specifications
