Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair



Return Spring With Slip Ring, Removing And Installing

Removing
- Remove driver side airbag unit
- Remove steering wheel.







- Remove two bolts - arrows -.
- Remove upper trim for steering column switches - 1 -.







- Unscrew 3 bolts - arrows -.
- Loosen height adjustment - 2 - for steering wheel.
- Remove lower trim -1 - for steering wheel switch.


NOTE: For easier removal of lower trim, remove height adjustment handle (two bolts).







Vehicles without ESP
- Disconnect harness connector - 1 -.
- Release catch - arrows - and pull return spring with slip ring from steering column switches.

NOTE:
- Wheels must be in straight-ahead position when removing or installing return spring with slip ring.
- A new return ring with slip ring is secured in the centered position with a cable tie.







Vehicles with ESP
- For vehicles with ESP, Steering Angle Sensor G85 is installed in housing - 1 - of return spring.







- Disconnect harness connectors - 1 - and - 2 -.







- Release catch - arrows - and pull return spring with Steering Angle Sensor G85 from steering column switch.


NOTE:
- Wheels must be in straight-ahead position when removing or installing return spring with steering angle sensor.
- A new return ring is secured in the centered position with a transport protection.


Installing
- Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.

For vehicles with ESP, also note the following:

- Install return spring with Steering Angle Sensor G85 and engage. For a new component, remove transport protection.







- A yellow dot must be visible in the hole - arrow 1 -.
- The markings - arrows - must align.

- After completing installation, perform basic setting of Steering Angle Sensor G85
