Readiness Code, Generating
Special tools, test equipment and auxiliary items
- VAG 1551 Scan tool (or VAG 1552 mobile scan tool) with cable VAG 1551/3B
- VAG 1788/10 Engine speed adjuster
Test conditions
- Vehicle stationary
- The battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V
- On vehicles with automatic transmission selector lever in "P" or "N" position
- All fuses must be OK.
- All electrical accessories, e.g. lights and rear window heating must be switched off
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) must be 60 to 80 °C, see display group 04, display zone 3
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT) less than 60 °C, see display group 04, display zone 4
NOTE: If within a work step the test result is shown as "OK" immediately after selecting a display group, then the test has already been performed and the next work step can be selected.
Work sequence
- Connect scan tools VAG 1551 or VAG 1552. Then switch ignition on and select Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- with "Address word" 01. Connecting scan tool and selecting Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-. [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool
Work step 1: Check DTC memory

- Press buttons -0- and -2- for function "Check DTC memory" and confirm entry with -Q- button.
The number of DTCs stored or "No DTC recognized!" will be shown on the display.
X DTC recognized!
If a DTC is stored:
- Repair malfunctions printed out as DTCs using Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) table:
- SAE P0 codes. P Code Charts
- SAE P1 codes. P Code Charts
If no DTC is stored:
- Press -> button.
- Continue with work step 3.
Work step 2: Erase DTC memory

Note: The readiness code is reset or erased each time DTC memory is erased.

Work step 3: Adapting the Throttle Valve Control Module -J338- to the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-

If the display indicates as described:
- Terminate engine basic setting at earliest after 30 seconds by pressing -> button.
- Start engine and run at idle speed.
NOTE: During the work sequence the engine must not be switched off.
Work step 4: Temperature check

- Switch off ignition and allow engine to cooled down.
- Repeat readiness code.
If the display indicates as described:

Work step 5: Leak detection system

If the diagnostic is initiated from Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."
- Continue to run engine at idle speed until specification "Syst. OK" is displayed in display zone 4.
NOTE:
- If the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test ON" to "Test OFF" during the diagnostic and "Abort" is displayed in display zone 2, repeat the "Leak diagnostic."
- The fuel tank cap must be opened briefly before repeating the diagnostic.
- When repeating the diagnosis it can take up to approx. 60 seconds before the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
If the display does not indicate as described:
- Press -> button.

Work step 8: Oxygen sensor (O2S) aging diagnostic before Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) (cycle duration monitor)

- Maintain engine speed at 1800-2200 RPM until Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) temperature in display zone 2 increases to above 350 °C.
If the diagnostic is initiated from Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."
- Check cycle duration in display zone 3:
Specification: maximum 1.99
- Continue to maintain speed at 1800-2200 RPM until specification "B1-S1 OK" appears in display zone 4.
If the display does not indicate as described:
- Remove engine speed adjuster VAG 1788/10 from accelerator pedal.
- Press -> button.
- Check DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
If the display indicates as described:
- Press -C- button.
Work step 9: Diagnostic of operational readiness for the Oxygen sensor after Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC)

If the display does not indicate as described:
- Remove engine speed adjuster VAG1788/10 from accelerator pedal.

If the display indicates as described:
- Press -C- button.
Work step 10: Diagnostic of Oxygen sensor (O2S) aging after Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC)

- Continue to maintain speed at 1800-2200 RPM until specification "B1-S2 OK" appears in display zone 4.
If the display does not indicate as described:
- Remove engine speed adjuster VAG 1788/10 from accelerator pedal.
- Press -> button.

If the display indicates as described:
- Press C button.
Work step 11: Diagnostic of oxygen sensor control system

Work step 12: Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) diagnostic
NOTE: The diagnostic will only be terminated if the Oxygen sensor (O2S) aging diagnostic is first successfully completed.

- Maintain engine speed at 1800-2200 RPM until Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) temperature in display zone 2 increases to above 440 °C.
If the diagnostic is initiated from Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."
- Check Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) conversion (amplitude condition) in display zone 3:
Specification:
- Max 0.20
- Continue to maintain speed at 1800-2200 RPM until specification "Cat B1 OK." appears in display zone 4.
NOTE: This process can take a few minutes.
If the display does not indicate as described:
- Remove engine speed adjuster VAG 1788/10 from accelerator pedal.
- Press -> button.
- Check DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
If the display indicates as described:
- Remove engine speed adjuster VAG 1788/10 from accelerator pedal.
- Press -C- button.
Work step 13: Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system diagnostic (EVAP Canister Purge Regulator Valve -N80- system)
NOTE: The engine must not be loaded during this diagnostic because the diagnostic will be interrupted and will not be started again until the engine is revved-up.
