Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor, Checking

Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor, checking

Recommended special tools and equipment
- VA.G 1526 multimeter or V.A.G 1715 multimeter
- V.A.G 1594 connector test kit
- Wiring diagram

Test requirements
- Respective fuses must be OK.
- Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 volts.
- All electrical consumers such as: lights and rear window defroster must be switched off.
- Parking brake must be engaged or else day time driving lights will be switched on.
- Ground (GND) connections to transmission must be OK.
- Selector lever must be in -P- position.
- Ignition switched off.

Test sequence:

Test sequence (vehicles with 01M transmission)
- Disconnect 12-pin harness connector at transmission.
Observe safety precautions.
- Check harness connector for contact corrosion and ingress of water.

If harness connector is not OK:
- Repair malfunction.
- Erase DTC memory of Transmission Control Module (TCM).
- Generate readiness code.

If harness connector is OK:
- Check resistance of Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor -G93-.

Check sensor resistance.
- Re-connect 12-pin connector.
- Connect test box to control module wiring harness.
- Measure resistance of Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor -G93- at test box between sockets 6 + 67:

ATF temperature Specified value
approx. 25 degrees C 230.0 to 265.0 kohms
approx. 60 degrees C 37.0 to 51.0 kohms
approx. 120 degrees C 5.0 to 9.0 kohms

If one of the specified values is not obtained:
- Check wires to Transmission Control Module (TCM) according to wiring diagram.

Checking wires to Transmission Control Module (TCM)
- Disconnect 12-pin harness connector at transmission.

- Check wires between test box and 12-pin connector to Transmission Control Module (TCM) for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Terminal 1 + socket 67
Terminal 12 + socket 6
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

- Check wires for short circuit to each other, to vehicle Ground (GND) and to B+.
Specified value: Infinite Ohms

If no malfunctions are found in wires:
- Replace circuit board with integrated Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor -G93-:
- Erase DTC memory of Transmission Control Module (TCM).
- Generate readiness code.

Test sequence (Vehicles with 09G transmission)

- Disconnect 8-pin harness connector -1-.
Observe safety precautions.
- Check harness connector for contact corrosion and ingress of water.

If harness connector is not OK:
- Repair malfunction.
- Erase DTC memory of Transmission Control Module (TCM).
- Generate readiness code.

If harness connector is OK:
- Check resistance of Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor -G93-.

Check sensor resistance.

- Measure resistance of Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor -G93- between terminals 1 + 2 at connector to sensor:

ATF temperature Specified value
approx. -30 degrees C 37.0 to 51.0kohms
approx. 10 degrees C 5.0 to 8.0 kohms
approx. 25 degrees C 3.0 to 5.0 kohms
approx. 110 degrees C 230.0 to 265.0 Ohms
approx. 145 degrees C 100.0 to 120.0 Ohms

If one of the specified values is not obtained:
- Replace Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor -G93-
- Erase DTC memory of Transmission Control Module (TCM).
- Generate readiness code.

If specified values are obtained:
- Check wires to Transmission Control Module (TCM) according to wiring diagram.

Checking wires to Transmission Control Module (TCM)
- Connect test box to control module wiring harness.

- Check wires between test box and 8-pin connector to Transmission Control Module (TCM) for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Terminal 1 + socket 45
Terminal 2 + socket 8
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

- Check wires for short circuit to each other.

Specified value: Infinite Ohms

If no malfunctions are found in wires:
- Replace Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-.
