Wheel Bearing/Hub Unit (W/Rear Drum Brakes), Remove & Install


Wheel bearing/wheel hub unit (vehicles with rear drum brakes), removing and installing





Special tools and equipment
^ VW 637/2 Grease cap puller
^ 3241/4 Seal installer
^ 3420 Assembly tool
^ VAG 1332 Torque wrench
^ VAG 1410 Torque wrench





Fig. 1 Removing brake drum
- Insert screwdriver through hole in brake drum and push wedge upward
- Remove Phillips-head screw for brake drum and remove brake drum.

- Loosen dust cap from seat by tapping lightly on claw.

- Remove 12-point nut.

A - Puller, e.g. Kukko 20/2

Only use puller with leg clamp -a- (e.g. Kukko 204-2) (commercial type)

- Install wheel bearing/hub unit as far as possible onto stub axle.
- Attach 3420 assembly tool and pull wheel bearing/hub unit on up to stop.
- Remove 3420 assembly tool.

- Install new 12-point nut -A- and tighten to 175 Nm (129 ft. lbs.).
- Install brake drum.

Notes:
^ Always replace dust caps.
^ Damaged (dented) dust caps allow moisture contamination, therefore always install using the seal installer shown.

Fastener/location Tightening torque
Brake drum to wheel bearing/hub unit 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.)
