Instrument Panel, Removing And Installing

NOTE: If necessary, obtain anti-theft radio coding before disconnecting battery.

Removing
- Switch ignition off.

CAUTION: Before working on electrical system: Disconnect battery ground (GND) strap.

- Remove driver side airbag unit.
- Remove steering wheel.

NOTE: For vehicles with Steering Angle Sensor G85 note:







- Remove two bolts - arrows -.
- Remove upper trim for steering column switches - 1 -.







- Unscrew 3 bolts - arrows -.
- Release height adjustment - 2 - for steering wheel.
- Remove lower trim - 1 - for steering wheel switch.

NOTE: For easier removal of lower trim, remove height adjustment handle (two bolts).







- Remove socket head bolt - 1 -.
- Disconnect harness connectors - arrows - from steering column switch.
- Remove steering column switches.







- Remove bolts - 1 -.
- Pull drivers side footwell cover - 2 - out of retainers - 3 - - arrow -.







- Remove right side instrument panel cover - 1 - from instrument panel at rear - 3 - and pull off from instrument panel toward rear.
- Remove bolts - 2 -.







- Slide center cover - 1 - of plenum chamber out of locking mechanism toward front and remove from instrument panel - arrow -.







- Slide radio removal tool T10057 into release slots until they engage.
- Pull radio out of instrument panel using grip rings on release tool and disconnect harness connectors.

NOTE:
- Radio removal tool T10057 must not be pushed to the side or tilted during procedure.
- To remove release tool from radio, press locking lugs on side of radio.







- Remove bracket - 1 - for flower vase - 2 - from instrument panel.







- Disconnect harness connector for emergency flasher switch.
- Disconnect harness connector for Front Passengers Airbag Disabled Indicator Lamp K145 05.03 -->.
- Remove bolts - 3 - and remove trim - 4 - from instrument panel.







- Pry off cover caps - 1 - and remove bolts - 2 -.
- Remove switch mount - 3 - from bracket.
- Disconnect harness connectors from switches.

Vehicles with external audio input jack







- Pry off audio input jack - 1 - from bracket - 2 -.
- If necessary, pry off bracket - 2 - from switch mount - 3 -.

Continuation for all vehicles







- Remove six bolts - arrows - (bolt in center of vehicle under cover cap).
- Remove glove compartment - 1 -.
- Disconnect harness connector for glove compartment lamp and, if necessary, disconnect key switch for airbag.







- Loosen left side instrument panel cover - 1 - from instrument panel at rear and pull out.
- Remove bolts - 2 - and two bolts - 3 - of fuse carrier.







- Turn rotating handle - 1 - of light switch to position 0.
- Push in rotating handle - arrow A - and turn toward the right - arrow B -.
- Pull switch out of instrument panel - arrow C - and disconnect harness connectors.
- Unclip switch - 2 - for headlight range control and disconnect connector.







- Remove four bolts - 1 -.
- Unclip upper trim on drivers side - 2 - and remove from instrument panel.







- Remove six bolts - 2 -.
- Remove baffle plate - 1 - (convertible).







- Remove air duct - 1 - above center of instrument panel.







- Remove three bolts - 1 -.







- Lift left cover - 1 - of plenum chamber in center of instrument panel - arrow A - and unclip (front edge clips, back edge clamps).
- Pull cover - 1 - toward vehicle center out of bracket underneath A-pillar - arrow B -.







- Lift right cover - 1 - of plenum chamber in center of instrument panel - arrow A - and thereby unclip (front edge clips, back edge clamps).
- Pull cover - 1 - toward vehicle center out of bracket underneath A-pillar - arrow B -.







- Unclip trim - 1 -.
- Remove bolts - 2 -.
- Pull out instrument panel - 3 -.
- Disconnect multi-pin connectors on rear side of instrument cluster.

Vehicles without cell phone retainer







- Remove covers - 1 -.
- Remove bolts - 2 - (8 Nm) and remove grab handle - 3 - from instrument panel.

Vehicles with cell phone retainer







- Remove bolts - 3 - and - 4 - from cell phone retainer.







- Remove cell phone retainer - 5 -.
- Remove covers - 2 -.
- Remove bolts - 1 - (8 Nm) and remove left retaining plate - 6 -. Remove grab handle - 7 - from instrument panel.

Continuation for all vehicles







- Remove four bolts - 1 -.
- Press heater and ventilation controls - 2 - with attached cables under instrument panel.







- Remove two bolts and remove housing - 3 - of instrument panel.







- Remove trim - 6 -.
- Remove bolts from underside (2x), upper edge (4x), and left side (1x) of left upper part of instrument panel - 2 -. Remove upper part of instrument panel - 2 - from base unit - 5 -.
- Remove bolts from underside (4x), upper edge (4x), and right side (1x) of right upper part of instrument panel - 4 -. Remove upper part of instrument panel - 4 - from base unit - 5 -.







- Remove bolts - 5 - (M8) and - 6 - and remove frame - 7 -.







- Remove bolts - 3 -, - 4 - and - 8 -.
- Remove attachment bolts for fuse panel to instrument panel.
- Pull off instrument panel base unit - 1 - from crossmember - 2 - and remove from vehicle.

Installing
- Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.

NOTE:
- After connecting battery, vehicle options (radio, clock, electric window regulator) must be checked according to repair manual and/or user manual.
- If DTC memory was erased or Motronic Engine Control Module J220 (ECM) was disconnected from battery, readiness code must be generated again.
- After completing installation, on vehicles with ABS perform basic setting of Steering Angle Sensor G85.
- If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K75 indicates malfunction after installation, DTC memory must be erased using Fault Read Out Device V.A.G 1551 and checked again.
