Body - Convertible Top Stops When Partially Open

Condition
Convertible Top, Operation Interrupted
Convertible top operation is interrupted when 3/4 open or when top binds on headrests.
Technical Background
Top opening is interrupted due to z-fold contacting back glass assembly.
Production Solution
Not applicable.
Service
^ Open top approximately 12 in. to relieve tension.
^ Remove headliner trim ring around rear glass.
^ Disconnect rear defogger wiring.
Tip:
Easier access may be obtained by removing the rear head
rests.
^ Partially remove headliner, beginning front to rear until 3rd bow is exposed, see Repair Manual, Group 61, Convertible Top > Removing and Installation > Convertible Top Headliner, Electric/Hydraulic and Manual Convertible Top.
^ Inspect 3rd bow in top assembly for elastic bands connected to spoiler above rear glass.
Top may have as many as 4 bands installed (this figure
displays 4 bands).
If 4 bands are installed currently:
^ Remove 2 outer bands and retest top operation.
If no bands or 2 bands are installed currently:
^ Install 2 additional inner bands as follows:
Obtain self tapping screws Part No. WHT 002 548, washers
Part No. WHT 002 549 and elastic bands Part No. 1Y0 862

Tip:
Note position of barrel washers on new bands. Barrel washers
attach to rear spoiler.
Band end attaching to 3rd bow should be folded at the end and
existing band bolt access holes used during mounting. Folded
end should point down upon assembly.
^ Attach 2 elastic bands, to 3rd bow first, approximately 102 mm (4 in.) on either side of center, 13 mm (� in.) down from top and tighten to 3 Nm (27 in. lbs.).
3rd bow strap installed.
^ Remove 2nd inner spoiler bolts.
^ Install washer(s) WHT 002 549 under bolt(s).
^ Install bolt(s) with strap(s) in same position on spoiler and tighten to 4.5Nm (40 in. lbs.).
^ Retest operation of convertible top.
^ Connect rear defogger wiring and reassemble headliner, see Repair Manual Repair Group 61, Convertible Top > Removing and Installation > Convertible Top Headliner, Electric/Hydraulic and Manual Convertible Top.
