Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Table: SAE P0 and VAG Codes


NOTE:
- The DTC overview is listed according to SAE or VAG code.
- Electronic accelerator EPC relevant malfunctions are indicated additionally by the Electronic Power Control (EPC) Warning Lamp -K132- in instrument cluster.
- Explanation of malfunction types (e.g. "open circuit/short circuit to Ground(GND)") See scan tool operating instructions
- If components are indicated as malfunctioning: First check the wiring and connectors to these components as well as the system Ground (GND) connections according to Electrical Wiring Diagram. This is particularly relevant if malfunctions are output as "occurring sporadically" (SP).
- Erase Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory after repairing malfunction and generate readiness code again.
Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes


VAG 1551 print out, e.g.:
- P0113 16497 035
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor -G42-
- Signal too large
- Sporadic malfunction

Explanation:
- P0113 - Additional DTC
- 16497 - DTC
- 035 = Malfunction type as a number
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor -G42- = Malfunction in wiring or incorrect location
- Signal too large = Malfunction type as text
- Sporadic malfunctions = Malfunctions that are not always present e.g. loose terminal


NOTE:
Explanation of SAE malfunction codes

System type
- Pxxxx = trouble code for drivetrain

Standard code:
- P0xxx = Malfunction codes defined according to SAE with specified malfunction texts
- P1xxx = Additional exhaust-relevant malfunction codes provided by manufacturer
- P2xxx = Malfunction codes defined according to SAE with specified malfunction texts from model year 2000
- P3xxx = Additional exhaust-relevant malfunction codes provided by manufacturer from model year 2000

System group:
- Px0xx = Fuel, air ratios and additional exhaust gas regulation
- Px1xx = Fuel and air ratios
- Px2xx = Fuel and air ratios
- Px3xx = Ignition system
- Px4xx = Additional exhaust regulation
- Px5xx = Speed and idle control
- Px6xx = Control module and output signals
- Px7xx = Transmission
- Px8xx = Transmission
- Px9xx = Control modules, input and output signals
