Output Diagnostic Test Mode (Function 03)



Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) (Function 03), Initiating

The Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) activates the following components in the stated sequence:
1. Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve -N80-
2. Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Solenoid Valve -N112-
3. Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299-
4. Wastegate Bypass Regulator Valve -N75-
5. Valve 1 for Camshaft Adjustment -N205-
6. Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-
7. Recirculating Valve for Turbocharger -N249-

Additionally for engine code AWV:
8. Brake System Vacuum Pump -V192- (only automatic transmission vehicles)

Special tools, test equipment and auxiliary items
- VAG 1551 Scan tool (or VAG 1552 mobile scan tool with cable VAG 1551/3B)
- VAG1598/31 Test box
- VAG1594 Adapter set
- VAG1526 and multimeter or VAG1715H multimeter
- VAG1527B voltage tester
- Electrical Wiring diagram

Test conditions






- Main fuses must be OK






- All fuses must be OK
- Ignition on, engine not running

NOTE:
- The Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) can only be performed if the engine is off and ignition switched on.
- The Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) will be aborted if the engine is started or a rotational impulse is recognized.
- During the Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) the individual Output Diagnostic Tests will be activated until advancing to the next Output Diagnostic Test by pressing the -> button.
- The Output Diagnostic Tests are checked by touch or noise when activation occurs.
- The electric fuel pump will run during the complete Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- The Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) will be aborted after 10 minutes.
- Run engine briefly first if there is a requirement to repeat Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).

Work sequence
- Connect scan tools VAG 1551 or 1552. Then switch ignition on and select Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- with "Address word" 01. (Connecting scan tool and selecting Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-.) [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool

- Operate scan tool taking into account information on display.
- Press buttons -0- and -3- for function "Output Diagnostic Test Mode."

- Confirm input with -Q- button.

Activating Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve -N80-:

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
EVAP Canister Purge Regulator Valve -N80-


The EVAP Canister Purge Regulator Valve must click until next Output Diagnostic Test is activated by pressing -> button.

The valve clicks but a malfunction is still suspected (valve does not open or close):
- Pull hose from pressure retention valve off solenoid valve.
- Connect an auxiliary hose to vacant valve connection.
- Blow into auxiliary hose during Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) (in direction of Throttle Valve Control Module -J338-).
Valve must open and close

If the solenoid valve does not click:






- Pull connector off solenoid valve -arrow-.







- Connect voltage tester VAG 1527B with auxiliary cables from VAG 1594 to disconnected connector.
LED must flash (bright/darker)

LED flashes:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replace solenoid valve -N80-
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from battery positive (B+), readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

LED does not flash:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left







- Connect test box VAG 1598/31 to control module wiring harness. Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- is not connected by this action.







- Check wire for open circuit between test box socket 64 and 2-pin connector terminal 2 using Electrical Wiring Diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive (B+) and Ground.
Specification: Infinity Ohms
- Check wire between 2 pin connector terminal 1 and Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit using Electrical Wiring Diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no wiring problems are detected:
- Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-.

Activating Secondary Air Injection Solenoid Valve -N112-:
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Secondary air inlet valve -N112-


Secondary air injection valve must run until next control element is activated by pressing button.

If the valve does not click:







- Pull 2-pin connector off secondary air injection valve -N112- -arrow-.







- Connect VAG 1527B voltage tester using adapter cables from VAG 1594 to disconnected connector.
LED must flash (bright/darker)

LED flashes:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replace secondary air injection valve -N112-
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from battery positive (B+), readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

LED does not flash:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left







- Connect test box VAG 1598/31 to control module wiring harness. Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- is not connected by this action.







- Check wire for open circuit between test box socket 9 + 2 pin connector terminal 2 using Electrical Wiring Diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive (B+) and Ground.
Specification: Infinity Ohms
- Check wire between 2 pin connector terminal 1 and Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit using Electrical Wiring Diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no wiring problems are detected:
- Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-.

Activating Secondary Air Injection Pump Relay -J299-:







- Check fuse for Secondary Air Pump Relay -J299- -arrow-.
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Secondary air pump relay -J299-


Secondary Air Pump Relay -J299- activates Secondary Air Pump Motor -V101- and this must run at intervals until next actuator is activated by pressing -> button.

If the Secondary Air Pump Motor -V101- does not run at intervals:







- Pull 2-pin connector off Secondary Air Pump Motor -V101- -arrow-.






- Connect VAG 1527B voltage tester using adapter cables from VAG 1594 to disconnected connector.
LED must flash

LED flashes:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replace Secondary Air Pump Motor -V101-.
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from battery positive (B+), readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If the LED does not flash but the Secondary Air Pump Relay -J299- clicks
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.







- Check wire between Secondary Air Pump Motor -V101- terminal 1 and body Ground for open circuit
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no wiring malfunctions are detected:







- Pull Secondary Air Pump Relay -J299- -arrow- off relay plate in control module protective housing.


NOTE:
- If tools are necessary to pull relays or control modules out of the relay plate, first disconnect battery Ground strap.
- Before disconnecting battery Ground strap obtain code for radios with anti-theft coding.







- Using Electrical Wiring Diagram check wire between Secondary Air Pump Motor -V101- terminal 2 and terminal 2 on relay plate for open circuit
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no wiring malfunctions are detected:







- Using Electrical Wiring Diagram check the voltage supply terminal 1 (terminal 30) for Secondary Air Pump Relay -J299-.

If voltage supply is OK:
- Replace Secondary Air Pump Relay -J299-.
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from battery positive (B+), readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If the LED does not flash and the Secondary Air Pump Relay -J299- does not click:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.







- Pull Secondary Air Pump Relay -J299- -arrow- off relay plate in control module protective housing.


NOTE:
- If tools are necessary to pull relays or control modules out of the relay plate, first disconnect battery Ground strap.
- Before disconnecting battery Ground strap obtain code for radios with anti-theft coding.







- Using adapter cables from VAG 1594 connect the VAG 1527B voltage tester to terminals 3 and 4 on relay plate.
- Perform Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) again and activate Secondary Air Pump Relay -J299-.
LED must flash

LED flashes:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replace Secondary Air Pump Relay -J299-.
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from battery positive (B+), readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

LED does not flash:







- Using adapter cables from VAG 1594 connect the VAG 1527B voltage tester to terminal 3 of relay plate and body Ground.
LED must light-up

LED does not light-up:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.







- Using Electrical Wiring Diagram check the wire between terminal 3 of relay plate and Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

LED lights up:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left.







- Connect test box VAG 1598/31 to control module wiring harness. Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- is not connected by this action.






- Check wire between test box socket 66 and terminal 4 on relay plate for open circuit using Electrical Wiring Diagram.
Wire resistance: Max. 1.5 Ohms

If no wiring problems are detected:
- Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-.

Activating Wastegate Bypass Regulator Valve -N75-:

- Press -> button.

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Wastegate bypass regulator valve -N75-


Solenoid valve must continue to click until next actuator is activated by pressing -> button.


NOTE: The clicking of the valve is difficult to hear and is therefore best checked by touch.


If the Wastegate Bypass Regulator Valve -N75- does not click:







- Pull 2 pin connector off Wastegate Bypass Regulator Valve -N75- -arrow-.







- Connect VAG 1527B voltage tester using adapter cables from VAG 1594 to disconnected connector.
LED must flash

LED flashes:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replace Wastegate Bypass Regulator Valve -N75-.
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from battery positive (B+), readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

LED does not flash:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left.







- Connect test box VAG 1598/31 to control module wiring harness. Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- is not connected by this action.







- Check wire between test box socket 104 + 2 pin connector terminal 2 for open circuit using Electrical Wiring Diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive (B+) and Ground.
Specification: Infinity Ohms
- Check wire between 2 pin connector terminal 1 and Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit using Electrical Wiring Diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no wiring malfunctions are detected:
- Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-.

Activate Valve 1 for Camshaft Adjustment -N205-:
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display:

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Intake Camshaft Control circuit


Valve 1 for Camshaft Adjustment -N205- must click until next actuator is activated by pressing -> button.

If valve does not click:







- Pull connector -arrow- off Valve 1 for Camshaft Adjustment -N205- and connect VAG 1527B voltage tester using adapter cables from VAG 1594 to disconnected connector.
LED must flash

LED flashes:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replace Valve 1 for Camshaft Adjustment -N205-
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from battery positive (B+), readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

LED does not flash:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left.







- Connect test box VAG 1598/31 to control module wiring harness. Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- is not connected by this action.
- Check wire between test box socket 115 + 2 pin connector terminal 2 for open circuit using Electrical Wiring Diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive (B+) and Ground.
Specification: Infinity Ohms
- Check wire between 2 pin connector terminal 1 and Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit using Electrical Wiring Diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no wiring malfunctions are detected:
- Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-.

Activating Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Leak diag. pump tank breathing system


Leak Detection Pump must run at intervals until next actuator is activated by pressing -> button.

If the leak detection pump does not run:
- Remove rear right wheel housing liner.







- Disconnect 3-pin connector -arrow- from Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-.







- Connect VAG 1527B voltage tester between disconnected connector terminals 2 and 3 using adapter cables from VAG 1594.
LED must flash (bright/darker)

LED flashes:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replace Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-:
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from battery positive (B+), readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

LED does not flash:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left.







- Connect test box VAG 1598/31 to control module wiring harness. Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- is not connected by this action.







- Check wiring for open circuit between test box and 3-pin connector using Electrical Wiring Diagram.
- terminal 1 + socket 80
- terminal 2 + socket 25
- Wire resistance: Max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive (B+) and Ground.
Specification: Infinity Ohms







- Check wire for open circuit between 3-pin connector terminal 3 and Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- using Electrical Wiring Diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no wiring problems are detected:
- Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-.

Activating Recirculating Valve for Turbocharger -N249-:
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Recirculating valve for turbocharg -N249


Recirculating Valve for Turbocharger must click.

If the solenoid valve does not click:







- Disconnect 2 pin connector from Recirculating Valve for Turbocharger -N249- -arrow-.







- Connect VAG 1527B voltage tester using adapter cables from VAG 1594 to disconnected connector.
LED must flash

LED flashes:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replace Recirculating Valve for Turbocharger -N249-.
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from battery positive (B+), readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

LED does not flash:
- Proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) until completed.
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left.







- Connect test box VAG 1598/31 to control module wiring harness. Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- is not connected by this action.







- Check wire between test box socket 105 + 2 pin connector terminal 2 for open circuit using Electrical Wiring Diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive (B+) and Ground.
Specification: Infinity Ohms
- Check wire between 2 pin connector terminal 1 and Fuel Pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit using Electrical Wiring Diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no wiring malfunctions are detected:
- Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-.

Only engine code AWV with automatic transmission

Activate Brake System Vacuum Pump -V192-
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display:

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Brake vacuum pump activation


Brake System Vacuum Pump -V192- must run audibly until Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) is terminated by pressing -> button.

If the brake system vacuum pump (V192) does not run:
- Check activation of vacuum pump

If vacuum pump runs:
- Press -> button.

- Press -> button.

- Press buttons -0- and -6- for function "End output" and confirm entry with -Q- button.
- Switch off ignition.
- Check DTC memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory, checking and erasing DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- was disconnected from battery positive (B+), readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes


NOTE: After completion of the Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) switch off ignition. If the ignition is not switched off before attempting to start, the engine will not start, as the injectors and the ignition transformer will not be activated.
