Readiness Code For Engine Code AWP, Generating
Special tools and equipment
- V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool (or vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552) with cable V.A.G 1551/3
Check conditions
- All fuses must be OK.
- Vehicle stationary
- On vehicles with automatic transmission selector lever in "P" or "N" position
- The battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V.
- All electrical consumers, e.g. lights and rear window defogger must be switched off.
- Intake air temperature less than 80 degrees C, see display group 04, display zone 4
- Coolant temperature between 60 and 80 degrees C, see display group 04, display zone 3
- The catalyst temperature must be at least 350 degree , see Display group 34, display zone 2
Work sequence
- Connect V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool (V.A.G 1552). Switch ignition on and select engine control module with "Address word" 01. (Connecting Scan Tool and selecting engine control module. [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool)
Work step 1: Check Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory
Indicated on display

Select function XX
- Press keys 0 and 2 for function "Check DTC memory" and confirm entry with Q key.
The number of DTCs stored or "No DTC recognized!" will be shown on the display.
X DTCs recognized!
If a DTC is stored:
- Repair DTCs printed out using DTC table.
- Press -> key.
- Continue with work step 3.
Work step 2: Erase DTC memory

- Press keys 0 and 5 for function "Erase DTC memory" and confirm entry with Q key.
NOTE: If the ignition is switched off between "Check DTC memory" and "Erase DTC memory" the DTC memory will not be erased.
- Press -> key.

Work step 3: Matching the throttle valve control module to the engine control module

- Check throttle valve control module.
If the display indicates as described:
- Start engine and run at idling speed.
NOTE: During the work sequence the engine must not be switched off.
Work step 4: Temperature check

If the specifications are not obtained:

- Press keys 0 and 6 for "End data transfer" function and confirm input with Q key.
- Switch ignition off and allow engine to cool down.
- Repeat readiness code.
If the display indicates as described:
- Press -> key.

Work step 5: EVAP system diagnosis (tank venting system)
- Press keys 0 and 4 for "Introduce basic setting" function and confirm entry with Q key.

- Allow engine to continue running at idling speed.
If the diagnosis is initiated from the engine control module the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON"
- Continue to run engine at idling speed until specification "Syst. OK" is displayed in display zone 4.
NOTE: If the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test ON" to "Test OFF" during the diagnosis and "Abort" is displayed in display zone 2, repeat the Leak diagnosis. When repeating the diagnosis it can take up to approx. 60 seconds before the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
- Press C key.
Work step 6: Diagnosis of oxygen sensor status

- Check operating condition of oxygen sensor control before catalyst (display zone 1):

- Check operating condition of oxygen sensor control after catalyst (display zone 2):

NOTE: The bits in display zone 2 will not be set to 1 until the catalyst temperature rises above 350 degrees C (See Display group 34, display zone 2).
Significance of 3 digit number block in display zones 1 and 2:
If the specifications are not obtained:
- Press -> key.
- Check DTC memory.
If the specifications are obtained:
- Press C key.
Work step 7: Diagnosis tank venting system
Test conditions
- Coolant temperature must be at least 60 degrees C, see display group 04, display zone 3.

- Run engine at idling speed until specification "EVAP OK" is displayed in display zone 4.
If the display does not indicate as described:
- Press -> key.
- Check DTC memory.
If the display indicates as described:
- Press C key.
Work step 8: Oxygen sensor aging diagnosis before catalyst (cycle duration monitor)

- Depress brake pedal and hold.
- Press accelerator pedal to wide open throttle position.
Engine speed is increased by the control module to 1800 to 2200 rpm.
- Maintain engine speed at 1800 to 2200 rpm until display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON". Catalyst temperature in display zone 2 must be between 350 and 500 degrees C.
- Check cycle duration in display zone 3:
Specification: maximum 2.5 s
- Continue to maintain speed at 1800 to 2200 rpm until specification "B1-S1 OK" appears in display zone 4.
If the display does not indicate as described:
- Release accelerator pedal and brake pedal.
- Press -> key.
- Check DTC memory.
If the display indicates as described:
- Release accelerator pedal and brake pedal.
- Press C key.
Work step 9: Secondary air system diagnosis

- Check DTC memory.
If the display indicates as described:
- Press C key.
Work step 10: Oxygen sensor control system diagnosis

The engine speed is increased by the control module to 1800 to 2200rpm.
If the diagnosis is initiated from engine the control module the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON"
- Continue to maintain the speed at 1800 to 2200 rpm until specification "Syst. OK" appears in display zone 4.
If the display does not indicate as described:
- Release accelerator pedal and brake pedal.
- Press -> key.
- Check DTC memory.
If the display indicates as described:
- Release accelerator pedal and brake pedal.
- Press C key.
Work step 11: Diagnosis of oxygen sensor aging after catalyst

- Depress brake pedal and hold.

Engine speed is increased by the control module to 1800 to 2200 rpm
- Maintain engine speed at 1800 to 2200 rpm until display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON". Catalyst temperature in display zone 2 must be min. 300 degrees C.
- Continue to maintain speed at 1800 to 2200 rpm until specification "B1-S2 OK" appears in display zone 4.
If the display does not indicate as described:
- Release accelerator pedal and brake pedal.
- Press -> key.
- Check DTC memory.
If the display indicates as described:
- Release accelerator pedal and brake pedal.
- Press C key.
Work step 12: Diagnosis of oxygen sensor operational readiness after catalyst

If the display does not indicate as described:
- Release accelerator pedal and brake pedal.
- Press -> key.
- Check DTC memory.
If the display indicates as described:
- Release accelerator pedal and brake pedal.
- Press C key.
Work step 13: Catalyst diagnosis
NOTE: The diagnosis will only be ended if the oxygen sensor aging diagnosis is successfully completed first.

Engine speed is increased by the control module to 1800 to 2200 rpm.
- Maintain engine speed at 1800 to 2200 rpm until display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON". Catalyst temperature in display zone 2 must be at least 440 degrees C.
- Continue to maintain engine speed at 1800 to 2200 rpm until Specification "CatB1 OK" appears in display zone 4.
If the display does not indicate as described:
- Release accelerator pedal and brake pedal.
- Press -> key.
- Check DTC memory.
If the display indicates as described:
- Release accelerator pedal and brake pedal.
- Press -> key.
