With Manufacturer's Scan Tool

Injectors, Checking

Special tools and equipment
- V.A.G1551 scan tool or
- V.A.G1552 mobile scan tool with
- V.A.G1551/3B cable V.A.G1598/31 test box
- V.A.G1526 or Fluke multimeter
- V.A.G1527 voltage tester
- V.A.G1594 adapter set
- Wiring diagram

Check conditions
- Engine speed sensor must be OK, checking. Testing and Inspection
- Fuel pump relay must be OK

- All fuses must be OK.

Test sequence
- First check activation of injectors via Output Diagnostic Test Mode.

If one or more injectors do not click:

Checking resistance of injectors

- Check resistance of injectors between contacts.
Specification: 12 to 17 Ohms

NOTE: The resistance figures are valid for approx. 20 degrees C. At higher temperatures the resistance figures will increase.

If the specification is not attained:
- Replace faulty injector

Pay attention to the following when installing the injectors:
- Replace O-rings on all injectors and lightly moisten with clean engine oil.
- Insert injectors vertically and in the correct position into the fuel rail and secure with retaining clips.
- Set fuel distributor with secured injectors on cylinder head and press in evenly.
- The connectors must audibly engage in the injectors when pushed on.

- Check DTC Memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then Erase DTC Memory.
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, readiness code must be generated again.

Checking voltage supply

- Disconnect connectors from injectors.
- Connect voltage tester to contact 1 and Ground (GND) of relevant injector connector.
- Operate starter and check voltage supply for injector.

LED must light up

If the LED does not light up:
- Switch ignition off.
- Check wire between 2-pin connector contact 1 and fuel pump (FP) relay -J17- for open circuit using wiring diagram.

Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

Checking activation and voltage supply

- Disconnect connectors from injectors.
- Connect V.A.G1527 voltage tester to connector contacts of injector to be tested using adapter cables from V.A.G1594.
- Operate starter and check activation for injector.

LED must flicker

If the LED does not flicker:
- Switch ignition off.
- Connect V.A.G1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. Engine control module remains disconnected.

- Check wiring between the test box and connector for open circuit, short circuit to Ground (GND) or positive using wiring diagram:
Injector 1: contact 2 + socket 96
Injector 2: contact 2 + socket 89
Injector 3: contact 2 + socket 97
Injector 4: contact 2 + socket 88
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If no malfunction can be found in the wiring:
- Replace engine control module.

Check injectors for leaks and quantity injected
Special tools and equipment
V.A.G1348/3 Remote control
V.A.G1348/3-2 Adapter
V.A.G1602 Calibration tester

Test conditions
- The fuel pressure must be in order. Testing and Inspection

WARNING: Fuel system is under pressure! Before opening the system remove fuse 28 and place a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully loosening the connection.

Test sequence
- Disconnect connectors from injectors.
- Remove fuel rail complete.
- Pull vacuum hose off fuel pressure regulator.
- Lift fuel rail with injectors off intake manifold and support it.

Checking for leaks
- Initiate Output Diagnostic Test Mode; fuel pump must run.

NOTE:
- This step serves only to run the fuel pump when the engine is stopped.
- During the Output Diagnostic Test Mode, the injectors are activated. Before initiate the Output Diagnostic Test Mode, you must disconnect the injector connectors.

- Check injector for leaks (visual check). Only 1 to 2 drops per minute must emit from each valve when fuel pump is running.

If the fuel loss is greater:
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace faulty injector.

Checking injected quantity

- Connect V.A.G1598/31 test box to control module wiring harness. The engine control module remains disconnected.
- Switch ignition on.
- Bridge sockets 2 + 65 of test box with adapter cables from V.A.G1594. Fuel pump must start.

NOTE: This work sequence allows the fuel pump to run when the engine is not running.

- Insert injector to be checked in a measuring glass of tester for injected quantity V.A.G1602.

- Connect one contact of injector to be tested to engine Ground (GND) using auxiliary cables from V.A.G1594.
- Connect second injector contact with auxiliary cable to V.A.G1348/3 remote control using V.A.G1348/3-2 adapter cable.
- Connect alligator clip to battery (+).
- Operate V.A.G1348/3 remote control for 30 seconds.
- Repeat check on other injectors using new measuring beakers.
- After all injectors have been activated, place measuring glasses on a horizontal surface and compare injected quantity.
Specification: 133 to 157 ml per injector

NOTE: If the measured values of one or more injectors are above or below the prescribed specifications:

- Replace faulty injector.

Perform installation of injectors in reverse order. When doing this note the following:
- Replace O-rings on all injectors and lightly moisten with clean engine oil.
- Insert injectors vertically and in the correct position into the fuel rail and secure with retaining clips.
- Install fuel rail with secured injectors onto intake manifold and press in evenly.

- Check DTC Memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then Erase DTC Memory.
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory has been erased or engine control module was disconnected from permanent positive, readiness code must be generated again.
