Radiator and Coolant Fan, Removing and Installing
Special Tools
- T10007 Refractometer
- V.A.G 1306 Drip tray
- V.A.G 1331 Torque wrench (5 to 50 Nm)
- VAS 5024 Assembly tool for spring type clamps

1 Radiator
2 O-ring - replace if damaged
3 Upper coolant hose - secured to radiator with retaining clip
4 Air ducting
5 Mounting Bolt. Torque Specification: 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
6 Additional fan - only on vehicles with optional equipment
7 Fan ring
8 Retaining clip
9 Connector
10 Radiator fan
11 Bracket for radiator fan connector
12 Lower coolant hose - secured to radiator with retaining clip
13 O-ring - replace
14 Thermoswitch. Torque Specification: 35 Nm (26 lbs. ft.) - for electric fan (F18)
15 Bracket for radiator - note installed position
16 Mounting Bolt. Torque Specification: 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.)
Removing
- Drain coolant. Refer to Cooling System, Service and Repair. Service and Repair
- Remove front bumper.
- Pull coolant hoses off radiator.
- Pull connectors off thermo-switch.
- Bring lock carrier into service position. Refer to Radiator Support, Service and Repair. [1][2]Procedures
- Remove radiator securing bolts and take radiator with fan out downwards.
Vehicles with Air Conditioner:
Observe additional information and removal work. Refer to Engine, Service and Repair. Service and Repair - "Additonal Information and Removal Instructions"
WARNING!
The air conditioner refrigerant circuit must not be opened.
Note:
To prevent damage to condenser also to the refrigerant pipes/hoses, make sure that the pipes and hoses are not stretched, kinked or bent.
- Remove retaining clamp(s) from refrigerant pipes.
- Remove condenser from radiator and secure to lock carrier.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order, when doing this note the following:
- Replace O-ring if damaged
- Fill with new coolant.
