Readiness code, generating

Special tools, test equipment and auxiliary items
- VAG 1551 scan tool (or vehicle system tester VAG 1552) with cable VAG 1551/3B


Test conditions







- All fuses must be OK
- Vehicle stationary
- The battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V
- All electrical consumers, e.g. lights and rear window heating must be switched off.
- Coolant temperature must be at least 80 °C, see display group 04, display zone 3.
- Intake air temperature less than 60 °C, see display group 04, display zone 4
- The catalyst temperature must be at least 250 °C and below 740 °C, see Display group 34, display zone 2
- On vehicles with automatic transmission selector lever in "P"or "N" position

Work sequence
- Connect VAG 1551 or 1552 Scan Tool.

Work step 1: Check DTC memory

- Switch ignition on (engine not running).

- Press buttons 0 and 2 for function "Check DTC memory" and confirm entry with Q button.

The number of DTCs stored or "No DTC recognized!" will be shown on the display.


X DTC recognized!


If a DTC is stored:
- Repair malfunctions printed out as DTCs using Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) table
- SAE P0 codes SAE P0 Codes
- SAE P1 codes SAE P1 Codes

If no DTC is stored:
- Press -> button.

Work step 2: Clear DTC memory

- Switch ignition on (engine not running).

NOTE: The readiness code is reset or erased each time DTC memory is erased.

Work step 3: Matching the throttle valve control module to the engine control module

- Switch ignition on (engine not running).

- Terminate engine basic setting at earliest after 30 seconds by pressing C-button.

Work step 4: Leak detection system diagnosis

- Vent fuel tank before diagnostic by briefly opening and closing filler cap.
- Press buttons 2, 0 and 2 for "Display group number 202" and confirm entry with Q button.

- Allow engine to run at idle speed until

NOTE:

- In case of malfunction, the message "fine leak" or "large leak" appears in display field 3.
- If "Abort" appears in display field 3, repeat leak diagnostic.
- Filler cap of fuel tank must be opened briefly before repeating diagnostic.
- Engine must not be switched again off during work sequence.


If the display does not indicate as described:
- Check DTC memory. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

If the display indicates as described:
- Press -> button.

Work step 5: Knock sensor diagnosis

- Carry out test drive with a 2nd person to observe display

Observe safety precautions during a test drive.

Observe test conditions.

- Start engine and select engine control module with "Address word" 01. When doing this engine must be running at idle speed. Connecting scan tool and selecting engine control module. [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool

Work step 6: Vehicle speed diagnosis

NOTE:
- Steps 7 through 14 can be performed while the accelerator and brake pedals are continually depressed if each step is successful.
- To change to another display group proceed as follows:







Work step 7: Heated oxygen sensor before catalyst (Bank1) diagnosis
- Leave engine running at idling speed.

Work step 10: Air mass filling detection diagnosis

Work step 11: Heated oxygen sensor after catalyst diagnosis, Bank 1

- Leave engine running at idling speed.

- The displayed value in display field 3 (catalyst temperature) must be between 200 °C and 600 °C. If catalyst temperature is too high, let vehicle cool off.
- Observe display in display zone 4.
- Depress brake pedal and hold.
- Depress accelerator pedal to wide open throttle position

The engine speed is increased by the control module to approx. 2300 RPM.
- Allow engine to run at increased speed until

If the display does not indicate as described:

Work step 12: Oxygen sensor voltage after catalyst diagnosis, Bank 1

- The displayed value in display field 3 (catalyst temperature) must be between 200 °C and 600 ° C. If catalyst temperature is too high, let vehicle cool off.

- Depress accelerator pedal to wide open throttle position

The engine speed is increased by the control module to approx. 2300 RPM.
- Allow engine to run at increased speed until

If the display does not indicate as described:

Work step 13: Swapping detection of oxygen sensors after catalyst, diagnosis
