Special tools and equipment
^ VAG1551 Scan Tool

Note: VAG1552 Scan Tool can be used instead of the VAG1551; however, the VAG1552 has no printer.

^ VAG1 551/3B Adapter cable
^ VAG1788/1 0 RPM adjuster (only for Engine code AEG)

Test sequence
- Connect VAG 1551/1552) Scan Tool.

Refer to Powertrain Management

- Start engine and let idle.
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select Address Word 01: "engine electronics". Press Q button to confirm input.
- Press (arrow) button.





Display will appear as shown
- Press O and 4 buttons to select Function 04: "Basic setting".
- Press Q button to confirm input.





Display will appear as shown
- Press 0, 4 and 6 buttons to select "Display group 46".
- Press Q button to confirm input.





Display will appear as shown (1 to 4 = Display zones)
Engine Code AEG
- Set engine speed with VAG1788/10 speed adjuster between 2800 and 3200 RPM.
- Maintain engine speed between 2800 and 3200 RPM until:
^ Value in display zone 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
^ The temperature value in display zone 2 must be 352.0 ° minimum.
- Continue maintaining engine speed between 2800 and 3200 RPM until:
^ Display zone 4 changes to "Cat. B1 OK".

Note: Catalyst diagnostic lasts about 100 seconds. If test does not complete after 150 seconds, adjust engine speed within range of 2800 to 3200 RPM.

- Remove VAG1788/10 engine speed adjuster from throttle pedal.
If "Cat. B1 not OK" appears in display zone 4:
- Check Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory:
Refer to Powertrain Management
- Display Readiness code:
- Readiness code must be reset if ECM is subject to low voltage with ignition ON or if DTC memory is erased.

If specification "Cat B1OK" is obtained:
- Press (arrow) button.





Display will appear as shown
- Press keys 0 and 6 for the function "End output" and confirm entry with the Q key.

Engine Codes AVH, AZG

Note: The test can be performed while the accelerator and brake pedals are continually depressed.

- Start engine and let motor run at idle speed.





Indicated on display
- Press keys 0 and 4 for the function "Basic Setting" and confirm entry with Q key.





Indicated on display
- Press keys 0, 4 and 6 for the "Display group number 46" and confirm entry with Q key.





Indicated on display: (1 . . .4 = Display zones)
- Depress brake pedal and hold.
- Press accelerator pedal to wide-open position.

The engine speed is increased by the control module to approximately 2 300 RPM.
- Maintain engine speed at approximately 2280 RPM until catalyst temperature in display zone 2 increases to above 540°C.
If the diagnosis is initiated from the engine control module the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."
- Depress brake pedal and hold.
- Press accelerator pedal to wide-open position.
The engine speed is increased by the engine control module to approximately 2300 RPM.
- Maintain engine speed at approximately 2280 RPM until catalyst temperature in display zone 2 increases to above 540°C.
If the diagnosis is initiated from engine control module the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."
- Check specifications in display zone 4:
Display zone 4: Cat B1. OK, Cat B1 n. OK





Indicated on display: (1...4 = Display zones)
If the display indicates as described:
- Press C key.





Display will appear as shown
- Press keys 0 and 6 for the function "End output" and confirm entry with the Q key.
- Press Q button to confirm input

Note:
This process can take a few minutes.
If the display does not indicate as described:

- Press (arrow) key.
- Check Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory:

- Display Readiness code:
