Rear Knuckle: Service and Repair


Wheel bearing housing (aluminum) and control arm, servicing

Note: If a vehicle has to be moved after removing the drive shaft, install an outer joint instead of a drive shaft and tighten to 50 Nm. Otherwise the wheel bearing will become damaged.

Wheel bearing, removing and installing

Removing
- Remove hex bolt for drive shaft.
- Remove wheels.





- Remove heat shield -arrows-.
- Unbolt drive shaft from drive flange.





- Remove hex key head bolt-1-.
- Disconnect ABS vehicle speed sensor -2- out from wheel bearing housing.





- Place transmission jack e.g. VAG 1383 A under control arm.
- Raise control arm slightly.
- Drive drive shaft out of hub with a plastic head hammer if necessary.
- Remove drive shaft.





- Remove securing bolts -1- from brake caliper.
- Remove brake caliper and hang up on body.
- Take off disc brake.





- Remove multi-point key head bolts -1- and -2-.





- Pull off wheel bearing/wheel hub unit.
- Remove cover plate.





- Press out wheel hub.





- Install separating device into annular groove of bearing inner race -arrow- and tension spindle.

Note: Use commercially available separating device e.g. Kukko 15-17.





- Press inner bearing race off wheel hub.

Installing





- Press wheel hub into new bearing to stop.
Further assembly work is carried out in the reverse order
- Install wheel and tighten.

Aluminum wheel bearing housing, removing and installing
Removing
- Remove hex bolt for drive shaft.
- Remove wheels.





- Remove securing bolts -1- from brake caliper.
- Remove brake caliper and hang up on body.
- Take off disc brake.





- Remove hex key head bolt -1-.
- Disconnect ABS vehicle speed sensor -2- out from wheel bearing housing.





- Remove bolt -1- for coupling link.





- Remove bolt -A- for track rod.
- Mark installation position of eccentric washer for bolt -B-.
- Remove bolt -B-.





- Remove bolt -2- for control arm -1-.
- Pull wheel bearing housing off drive shaft.

Installing
Install in reverse order
- Install wheel and tighten.
After installing check position of steering wheel during a test drive.
If steering wheel is not in straight ahead position the front axle tracking must be checked!
Tightening torques:
Upper control arm to wheel bearing housing
Lower control arm to aluminum wheel bearing housing
Drive shaft to wheel hub
Track rod to wheel bearing housing
Coupling rod to anti-roll bar
Brake caliper to wheel bearing housing

The bonded rubber mounting in the wheel bearing housing is comprised of two parts. Removing is under taken in two work sequences.

Removing
Pressing out first bonded rubber mounting
Bend bonded rubber mounting plate collar over slightly.





- Install separating device and tighten spindle.
A- Separating device 17 thru 75 mm, e.g. Kukko 17/1
The tool cutters must be positioned exactly between the bonded rubber mounting collar and the wheel bearing housing.
- Insert pin 3293/1.





- Install tool 3349 so that the cutters slide exactly between the bonded rubber mounting and the wheel bearing housing.
- Turn spindle -2- until the bonded rubber mounting lifts slightly off the wheel bearing housing.
- Tighten bolts -1-.
A- Separating device 17 thru 75 mm, e.g. Kukko 17/1





- Press one of the bonded rubber mountings out by turning the hex bolt -1-.

B - Puller, e.g. Kukko 18/0

Pressing out second bonded rubber mounting





- Insert thrust piece 3349/1 and use spindle from 3292.
- Pull bonded rubber mounting out by turning spindle.

Note: Make sure that the too/ cutters lie completely on the shoulder of the bonded rubber mounting while pulling out.

Installing bonded rubber mounting into wheel bearing housing
Installing the bonded rubber mounting is completed in one sequence.





- Install both bonded rubber mountings together with tool 3292/3.
- Pull in bonded rubber mountings by turning the spindle.
