Readiness Code For Engine Code AWW, Generating

Special tools and equipment
- V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool (or vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552) with cable V.A.G 1551/3

V.A.G 1788/10 Engine Speed Adjuster:

- V.A.G 1788/10 Engine speed adjuster

Test conditions
- Vehicle stationary
- On vehicles with automatic transmission selector lever in "P" or "N" position







- All fuses must be OK.
- All electrical consumers, e.g. lights and rear window defogger must be switched off.
- The battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V.
- Intake air temperature less than 80 °C See display group 04, display zone 4
- Coolant temperature between 60 and 80 °C See display group 04, display zone 3
- The catalyst temperature must be at least 350°, See Display group 34, display zone 2

Work sequence
- Connect V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool ((V.A.G 1552). Switch ignition on and select engine control module with "Address word" 01. (Connecting Scan Tool and selecting engine control module.) [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool

Work step 1: Check DTC memory

- Press keys 0 and 2 for function "Check DTC memory" and confirm entry with Q key.


X DTCs recognized!


The number of DTCs stored or "No DTC recognized!" will be shown on the display.

If a DTC is stored:
- Repair DTCs printed out using DTC table:
Refer to SAE P0 codes P Code Charts
Refer to SAE P1 codes P Code Charts

If no DTC is stored:
- Press -> key.
- Continue with work step 3.

Work step 2: Erase DTC memory

- Press keys 0 and 5 for function "Erase DTC memory" and confirm entry with Q key.


NOTE: The readiness code is reset or erased each time the DTC memory is erased.

NOTE: If the ignition is switched off between "Check DTC memory" and "Erase DTC memory" the DTC memory will not be erased.

Work step 3: Matching the throttle valve control module to the engine control module

- End engine basic setting at earliest after 30 seconds by pressing key.

If the display does not indicate as described:
- Check throttle valve control module. Throttle Valve Control Module -J338- Checking

If the display indicates as described:
- Start engine and run at idling speed.


NOTE: During the work sequence the engine must not be switched off.


Work step 4: Temperature check

Specification: maximum 60 to 80 °C
- Read intake air temperature value in display zone 4.

If the specifications are not obtained:
- Press -> key.
- Press keys 0 and 6 for "End data transfer" function and confirm input with the Q key.
- Switch ignition off and allow engine to cool down.
- Repeat readiness code.

If the display indicates as described:
- Press -> key.

Work step 5: EVAP system diagnosis (tank venting system)

- Press keys 0 and 4 for "Introduce basic setting" function and confirm entry with Q key.

- Allow engine to continue running at idling speed.

If the diagnosis is initiated from the engine control module the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON"
- Continue to run engine at idling speed until specification "Syst. OK" is displayed in display zone 4.


NOTE: If the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test ON" to "Test OFF" during the diagnosis and "Abort" is displayed in display zone 2, repeat the Leak diagnosis. When repeating the diagnosis it can take up to approx. 60 seconds before the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".


- Press C key.

Work step 6: Diagnosis of fuel system

- Allow engine to continue running at idling speed.

If the diagnosis is initiated from engine control module the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON"
- Continue to run engine at idling speed until specification "Syst. OK" is displayed in display zone 4.

If the display does not indicate as described:
- Check DTC memory.

If the display indicates as described:
- Press C key.

Work step 7: Diagnosis of tank venting system

Test conditions
- Coolant temperature must be at least 60 °C, See display group 04, display zone 3.

- Press keys 0, 7 and 0 for the "Display group number 70" and confirm entry with Q key.

- Allow engine to continue running at idling speed.

When the diagnosis is initiated by the engine control module the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON"
- Run engine at idling speed until specification "EVAP OK" is displayed in display zone 4.

If the display does not indicate as described:
- Check DTC memory.

If the display indicates as described:
- Press C key.

Work step 8: Diagnosis of oxygen sensor operational readiness after catalyst

- Press keys 0, 3 and 6 for "Display group number 36" and confirm entry with Q key.

- Set engine speed to 1800 to 2200 rpm using VAG1788/10 engine speed adjuster:
- Maintain speed at 1800...2200 rpm until specification "B1-S2 OK" appears in display zone 2.

If the display does not indicate as described:
- Remove engine speed adjuster V.A.G 1788/10 from accelerator pedal.
- Check DTC memory.

If the display indicates as described:
- Press C key.

Work step 9: Diagnosis of oxygen sensor aging after catalyst

- Press keys 0, 4 and 3 for "Display group number 43" and confirm entry with Q key.

- Maintain engine speed at 1800...2200 rpm until display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON". Catalyst temperature in display zone 2 must be be at least 300 °C.
- Continue to maintain speed at 1800...2200 rpm until specification "B1-S2 OK" appears in display zone 4.

If the display does not indicate as described:
- Remove engine speed adjuster V.A.G 1788/10 from accelerator pedal.
- Check DTC memory.

If the display indicates as described:
- Press -> key.

- Check operating condition of oxygen sensor control after catalyst (display zone 2): Specification: xxx


Note: The bits in display zone 2 will not be set to 1 until the catalyst temperature rises above 350 °C (See Display group 34, display zone 2).


Significance of 3 digit number block in display zones 1 and 2:







If the specifications are not obtained:
- Remove engine speed adjuster V.A.G 1788/10 from accelerator pedal.
- Check DTC memory.

If the specifications are obtained:
- Press -> key.

Work step 11: Oxygen sensor aging diagnosis (cycle duration monitor)

- Maintain engine speed at 1800...2200 rpm until display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON". Catalyst temperature in display zone 2 must be between 350 and 500 °C.
- Check cycle duration in display zone 3: Specification: maximum 2.5 s
- Continue to maintain speed at 1800...2200 rpm until specification "B1- S1 OK" appears in display zone 4.

If the display does not indicate as described:
- Remove engine speed adjuster V.A.G 1788/10 from accelerator pedal.
- Check DTC memory.

If the display indicates as described:
- Press C key.

Work step 12: Oxygen sensor control system diagnosis

- Press keys 0, 3 and 7 for "Display group number 37" and confirm entry with Q key.

- Continue to maintain speed at 1800...2200 rpm until specification "Syst. OK" appears in display zone 4.

If the display does not indicate as described:
- Remove engine speed adjuster V.A.G 1788/10 from accelerator pedal.
- Check DTC memory.

If the display indicates as described:
- Press C key.

Work step 13: Catalyst diagnosis


NOTE: The diagnosis will only be terminated if the oxygen sensor aging diagnosis is first successfully completed.

- Continue to maintain engine speed at 1800...2200 rpm until Specification "CatB1 OK" appears in display zone 4.

If the display does not indicate as described:
- Remove engine speed adjuster V.A.G 1788/10 from accelerator pedal.
- Check DTC memory.

If the display indicates as described:
- Press C key.
- Remove engine speed adjuster V.A.G 1788/10 from accelerator pedal.

Work step 14: Secondary air system diagnosis
- Allow engine to continue running at idling speed.
