Removal and Replacement
Flange Shaft Oil Seals
(Transmission installed)
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Needle bearing drift -VW 295-
- Extractor lever -VW 681-
- Driver -2062-
- Puller -T10037-
- Torque wrench 5-50 Nm -V.A.G 1331-
- Torque wrench 40-200 Nm -V.A.G 1332-
Removing
- Turn steering as far as possible toward left.
- Remove heat shield bolts and shield -arrow 1- over right drive axle.
- Remove heat shield over left drive axle, if installed.
- Place drip tray underneath.
- Remove drive axle from flange shaft.
- Tie up drive axle as far away as possible. This ensures that drive axle paint is not damaged.
Replacing Left Seal
- To remove drive flange, bolt puller -T10037- to differential cover -arrow-.
Replacing Right Seal
- To remove drive flange, bolt puller -T10037- to transmission cover -arrow-.
- Always replace circlip for flange shaft.
- Clamp flange shaft in vise with protective jaws. Press circlip with new circlip -A- out of flange shaft groove.
- Remove drive flange seal using extractor lever -VW 681- .
Installing
Note
Repair offset 6.5 millimeter (mm) when using old drive flange.
Seal can also be driven in using driver -2062- .
- Lightly oil outer circumference of seal.
- Drive in new right hand drive flange seal 5.5 mm below housing surface, without tilting.
- Lubricate sealing lip and dust lip with sealing grease -G 052 128 A1- .
- Drive in new left hand drive flange seal 5.5 mm below housing surface, without tilting.
- Drive in drive flange using needle bearing drift -VW 295- .
- Bolt drive axle on flange shaft.
- Bolt on cover plates for drive axle.
- Check transmission fluid.
Tightening Specifications
Drive axle to flange shaft M8 45 Nm
Drive axle to drive flange M10 70 Nm
Cover plates above drive axles to transmission 20 Nm
