Procedures


Oil seals for flanged shafts, replacing

Special tools and workshop equipment required





- VW 295 Drift
- VW681 Extractor
- 2062 Punch
- T10037 Puller
- VAG1331 Torque wrench
- VAG 1332 Torque wrench

Removing
- Turn steering to left onto full lock stop.





- Remove cover plate over the right-hand drive shaft (arrows 1 and 2).
- If fitted, remove cover above left-hand drive shaft.
- Place drip tray underneath.
- Disconnect drive shaft from flanged shaft.
- Tie-up drive shaft as high as possible. Do not damage paint on drive shaft.

When replacing left-hand oil seal:





- Remove flange shaft, to do this screw puller T10037 onto differential cover (arrow).

When replacing right-hand oil seal:





- Remove flange shaft, to do this secure puller T10037 to transmission housing (arrow).





- Always replace flange shaft circlip.
- Clamp flange shaft in vice, using vice clamps. Use new circlip -A- to press old circlip out of groove in flange shaft.
- Pull out flange shaft oil seal with VW 681.

Installing

Notes:
- Repair pressing depth 6.5 mm if same flanged shaft is used again.
- Seal can also be driven in with punch 2062.

- Lightly oil outer circumference of oil seal.





- Knock new right-hand flange shaft oil seal in 5.5 mm below housing outer surface, do not cant seal when doing this.
- Fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with grease G 052 128 A1.





- Knock new left-hand flange shaft oil seal in 5.5 mm below housing outer surface, do not cant seal when doing this.
- Knock flange shaft in with drift VW 295.
- Bolt drive shaft to flange shaft.
- If part of vehicle equipment refit drive shaft cover plates.
- Check transmission oil.

Tightening torques
Drive shaft to flanged shaft M8 45 Nm
Drive shaft to flanged shaft M10 70 Nm
Cover plates above the drive shafts to transmission 20 Nm
