Torque Converter: Service and Repair


Torque converter





1. Torque converter
- Secure in place when transmission is removed
2. Oil seal
3. Bearing ring
- Behind oil seal
- Replace if damaged

There are various torque converters. They are identified by code letters (arrow).

Torque converter, checking





- Check torque converter hub for irregular grooves -arrow-.
The torque converter is a sealed unit (welded) and must be replaced if damaged.

Torque converter oil seal, removing and installing
Special tools and equipment





- VW 681 Extractor lever





- 3295 Thrust piece

Removing
- Remove transmission.
- Secure transmission on repair stand.





- Apply extractor lever VW 681 directly behind the sealing lip of the oil seal to avoid damaging the bearing ring behind it.

Installing
- Insert bearing ring.
- Apply ATF to circumference and sealing lips of oil seal.
Installation position:
Open side of oil seal faces transmission.





- Using thrust piece 3295, drive in torque converter oil seal until stop of thrust piece.
- Install transmission.

- VAG 1358 A Oil extractor
- VAG 1358 A/1 Oil extractor probe
If the torque converter has become fouled by abrasion or when performing a major overhaul of the transmission, drain the torque converter as follows:





- Extract ATF from torque converter using VAG 1358 A and probe VAG 1358 A/1.

Special tools and equipment
- Depth gauge
- Push on torque converter hub to first stop via oil seal.
- Turn torque converter inward using light pressure until opening in hub engages with follower of pump sprocket and until torque converter can be felt to slip in place.





If the converter is correctly positioned, the distance between the contact surfaces below at the tapped holes in the converter and the contact surface of the converter bell of automatic transmission 01V is about 23 mm.
If the converter is not correctly positioned, the distance is about 11 mm.

WARNING!: If the torque converter is left in the wrong installation position, the follower of the converter or ATF pump will be destroyed when file transmission is connected to the engine.
