Oil Seal, Replacing (Right)
- Remove noise insulation tray (arrows).
- Remove right inner constant velocity joint protective cover from engine if equipped.
- Remove bolts from axle shaft flange.
- Place axle shaft to one side and secure.
- If necessary remove right axle shaft.
Oil Seal, Replacing (Left)
- Loosen wheel bolts with vehicle standing on its wheels.
- Lift vehicle.
- Remove wheel.
- Remove left noise insulation (arrows).
- Remove axle from drive flange.
- Remove pendulum support from sub-frame (arrows).
- Mark installation position of ball joint bolts on left control arm and remove bolts.
- Remove bolts (arrows).
- Disconnect left stabilizer link -1-from control arm and turn coupling rod up.
- Swing wheel bearing housing outward.
- Guide axle shaft out between sub-frame and transmission, while pushing engine/transmission assembly forward (you need a 2nd technician).
- Lift axle shaft and secure to suspension strut with wire.
Continued For Both Oil Seals
- Pierce sealing cap in drive flange with screwdriver and pry out.
- Bolt Kukko 18-0 puller to axle shaft flange with two 8x35 mm bolts and 8 mm washers.
- Remove circlip for drive flange.
- Remove drive flange.
- Remove drive flange oil seal with VW 681.
- Install (pull in to stop) new oil seal with press piece 3319, M10 threaded rod approx. 80 mm long (3.15 inch) and nut with washer.
- Fill space between seal and dust lip with multipurpose grease.
- Insert drive flange.
- Pull drive flange in.
Note:
^ Drive flange can also be installed (pulled in) with VW 391.
- Install dished washer and circlip.
- Install drive flange cover.
- Reconnect ball joint to control arm.
- Tighten bolts (arrows) to specified torque.
- Secure stabilizer link to control arm.
- Install axle shaft.
- Install wheel.
- Check final drive oil level.
- Install noise insulation tray.
Tightening Torque
Axle Shaft To Drive Flange 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
Ball Joint To Control Arm 35 Nm (25 ft. lbs.)
Tie Rod To Control Arm 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.)
Pendulum Support To Sub-Frame 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs. + 90 degrees)
Wheel Bolts To Wheel Hub 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.)
