1 Bearing Shells No. 1, 2, 4 and 5
2 Main Bearing Cap Bolts

9 Lower Main Bearing Thrust Washers

NOTE: During removal and installation procedures, refer to the component location illustration above and component notes below.

COMPONENT NOTES
Bearing Shells No. 1, 2, 4 and 5 (1)
- Shells without oil groove installed in bearing caps.
- Shells with oil groove installed in block.
- Do not interchange used bearings.

Main Bearing Cap Bolts (2)
- Tighten to 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.)

Main Bearing Caps (3)
- Bearing cap 1 installed at pulley end.
- Bearing cap 3 with recesses for thrust washers.
- Bearing shell retaining lugs of cylinder block and bearing cap must be on the same side.

Bearing Shell No. 3 (4)
- Shells without oil groove installed in bearing caps.
- Shells with oil groove installed in block.
- Do not interchange used bearings.

Upper Main Bearing Thrust Washers (5)
- Install on bearing cap No. 3.
- Refer to illustration for installed position.

Sensor Gear (6)
- For engine speed sensor.
- Always replace.

Sensor Gear Bolt (6)
- Tighten in two steps as follows:
- 1st step, tighten to: 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.).
- 2nd step: turn an additional 90° (1/4 turn).

Crankshaft (9)
- Check Crankshaft Axial Clearance:

- New: 0.07 to 0.17 mm (0.0028-0.0067 inch).
- Wear limit: 0.25 mm (0.0098 inch).

- Check Main Bearing Journal Radial (Oil) Clearance Using Plastigage:

- New: 0.02 to 0.06 mm (0.0008-0.0024 inch).
- Wear limit: 0.17 mm (0.0067 inch).

- Do not allow the crankshaft to rotate while measuring radial clearance.

Lower Main Bearing Thrust Washers (10)
- Install at block bearing No. 3.
- Refer to illustration for installed position.
