Compact Disc (CD) changer, installing (vehicles with "Sound System"radios)
The following describes the factory approved service installation of Volkswagen CD changers, Part No.1J6 035 111 into Golf and Jetta vehicles equipped with Volkswagen Sound System Radios, Part No. 1JO 035 180 C.
Notes: Use the following factory developed CD changer kits containing model specific mounting brackets and hardware:
- Golf: Part No. 1HM 098 201
- Jetta: Part No. 1HM 098 111 F
- Some 1998 m.y. vehicles equipped with Sound System were not factory equipped with CD prep. Before proceeding with installation, inspect for CD prep:
- Vehicles not equipped with CD prep require installation of a CD changer cable as listed:
- Golf/Cabrio: Part No. 1HM 035 592 F
- Jetta: Part No. 1HM 035 592 E
CAUTION!
- Part numbers are for reference only. Always check with your Parts Department for latest parts information.
- Always confirm CD changer and radio brand compatibility with your Parts Department.
- Carefully review all of the following instructions before proceeding with installation.
- Never install CD changer in a location, position or manner other than specified by these instructions.
Golf/Cabrio, installed position
Rear side rail of luggage compartment floor, ahead of right tail light assembly.

Golf/jetta CD changer, preparation
- Check the settings of both CD changer angle installation selection switches. For Golf/Jetta application, switches must set to the vertical ("V") position. Switches are located on side and bottom of CD changer.
Note: CD playback will skip if switches are not set correctly.
Setting:
Sides
- If necessary, remove brackets on sides of C changer.
- Insert tip of small screwdriver into round hole and slide switch completely to the vertical ("~ position.
Notes:
- Angle of installation selection switches may preset at the manufacturer for horizontal ("H") installation.
- Always check/set switches prior to CD changer installation.
- Switches must move completely to their end positions.
- Cover selector switch openings with supplied self adhesive seals.
- Reinstall brackets on sides of CD changer.
CAUTION! Before proceeding with installation:
- Obtain radio security code.
- Note customers pre-set radio stations.
- Ignition OFF!
- Disconnect Battery Ground (GND) strap.
- Inspect vehicle for CD-prep (see below).
Golf CD-Prep, inspection
If vehicle is factory equipped with CD changer cable -1- (location under rear seat as shown):
- Complete routing of CD changer cable:

Jetta CD-Prep, inspection
- If vehicle is factory equipped with CD changer cable (location at left rear tail light assembly as shown):

Golf/jetta CD changer cable, installation
- Remove radio using tool VW16O.
- Remove passenger side knee bar (or tray if equipped).
- Connect CD changer cable connector -1- to 8 pin terminal on rear of radio (upper right connector on radio).
- Feed remaining CD changer cable into area removed passenger side knee bar (or tray) for routing.
- Secure CD changer cable to existing wiring harness using supplied cable ties -3-, or use adhesive tape to route along metal framework.
Note: Ensure CD changer cable is secured in a manner to prevent rattles and squeaks.
- Feed remaining CD changer cable into passengers footwell kick panel area for rout along passenger sill panel.
- Reinstall radio and passenger side knee bar tray), making sure that CD changer cable is pinched.
- Remove passenger side footwell trim -2- and panel trim -1-.
- Lift rear seat bottom cushion and remove rear sill panel trim -4-.
Golf,routing
- If necessary remove rear seat and center luggage compartment floor carpet.
- Route CD changer cable along passenger side sill panel, under rear seat, and into luggage compartment area to right rear as shown (fasten with adhesive tape).
- Fasten ground connection.
Jetta, routing
- If necessary remove rear seat and center luggage compartment floor carpet.
- Route CD changer cable along passenger side sill panel, under rear seat, and into luggage compartment area to left rear tail light area as shown (fasten with adhesive tape).
- Fasten ground connection.
Golf/jetta, CD changer cable, installation continued
- Secure CD changer cable to sill panel at all of the vehicle main harness clamp locations as illustrated.
Jetta, installation continued below
- Lift right rear luggage compartment side panel carpet below "C" pillar as necessary.
- Route CD changer cable into area behind carpet and fasten with adhesive tape as shown.
- Measure, mark and center punch mounting holes for CD changer mounting bracket as illustrated.
a = 107.5 mm
b = 82.5 mm
c = 77.5 mm
d = 11 mm
e = 55 mm
- Drill 4mm holes at marked locations.
- Fasten ground connection as shown -arrow-.
Golf, installation continued
- Mount CD changer bracket -2- to main bracket -3- using supplied nuts -8-.
- If necessary, mount support -6- to CD changer-i- using supplied self tapping screws -5-.
- Mount CD changer -1- to changer bracket -2- using supplied self tapping screws -7-.
- When mounting CD changer into bracket, pass connector cable under bracket -arrow-.
- Refit side panel carpet below "C" pillar.
- Connect CD changer cable to CD changer connector -arrow-.
- Route and secure excess cable as necessary.
- Locate previously drilled holes through carpet, fasten CD changer assembly to vehicle floor rail (over carpet) at drilled locations using self tapping screws.

Jetta, installation continued
- Use CD changer bracket as drilling template Place on top of left rear side panel carpet at floor so that mounting flange holes correspond to raised portions of luggage compartment floor (see illustration).
- Hold bracket firmly in place and drill four, 4mm holes at the bracket mounting flange, through carpet, into luggage compartment floor rail.
Note: When using the bracket as a drilling template, square opening in one side of the changer bracket MUST face the tail light assembly.
Corresponding dimensions:
- a = 40 mm
- b = 307 mm
- Mount support -5- to CD changer -1 - using supplied self tapping screws -4-.
- Mount CD changer -1- to changer bracket -2- using supplied self tapping screws -6-.
- Route and secure CD changer cable as as shown (make a small slit in carpet to allow c to pass through).
- Connect CD changer cable to connector on changer -arrow-.
- Route and secure excess cable as necessary.
- Fasten CD changer assembly to vehicle floor (over carpet) at drilled locations using self tapping screws.
- Optional method is to fasten empty CD changer bracket to vehicle floor first (without CD changer installed), then mount CD changer to bracket.

- Reinstall and secure all previously removed sill panel trim, seat cushions and luggage compartment carpet.
- Vacuum luggage compartment (including underneath all carpet areas if necessary).
- Reconnect Battery Ground (GND) strap,
- Input radio security code and reset customer's preset stations.
- Code radio for CD changer operation~ Repair Group 01
- Refer to CD changer owner's guide and check proper operation of CD changer.
- Ensure CD changer owner S guide is forwarded to customer.
Note: After reconnecting battery:
- Activate vehicle vehicle equipment such as clock and power windows as per Repair Manual and/or Owner's Manual.
- Activate readiness code.
