SELECTOR LEVER MECHANISM, DISASSEMBLING AND ASSEMBLING (WORK SEQUENCE)

Disassembling
- Remove selector lever mechanism.
- First remove stop buffer from cable lever.
- Shift selector lever into Tiptronic position, then remove frame.
- Shift selector lever into position "2."
- Lift lever for locking cable, detach from mount and remove from mounting bracket.
- Shift selector lever to position "D."
- Carefully pry spring clip for Tiptronic position out of mounting bracket from outside.
- Pull out locking clips for selector lever mounting bushings.
- Push out selector lever mounting bushings using screwdriver.
- Remove selector lever as complete unit.
Disassembling selector lever. Selector Lever
- To remove mount for selector lever Tiptronic position, release retaining lugs (Qty. 3) on outside of mounting bracket and take mount out from inside.
- Press out pin for locking pawl using drift. Support mounting bracket with VW423 sleeve when doing this.
- Lift out shift lock solenoid together with locking pawl.
- Carefully pry spring clip for shift lever positions out of mounting bracket from outside.
- Move cable lever to park position.
- Press out left bearing pin first and then right pin using drift from inside.
- Pull cable lever and detent (in park position) out of mounting bracket upward.
- Disengage detent from cable lever.

Assembling
- Engage detent in cable lever.
- Install cable lever and detent into mounting bracket from above (opening of detent is installed first).
- Drive both mounting pins for cable lever/detent into mounting bracket as far as they will go. Support on inside when doing this.
- Press spring clip with roller for shift lever positions into mount on mounting bracket as far as it will go.
- Install shift lock solenoid in mounting bracket from above together with locking pawl.
- Carefully drive in pin for locking pawl. Support mounting bracket on VW423 sleeve when doing this.
- Use screwdriver to make sure locking pawl is properly engaged when selector lever is in positions "P" and "N."
- Press mount for Tiptronic position into mounting bracket from inside. Locking lugs (Qty. 3) must engage.
- Install selector lever in mounting bracket as complete unit.
- Engage selector lever in cable lever at top and bottom.
- Slide two selector lever mounting bushings into mounting bracket one from front and one from rear.
- Install locking clips to secure mounting bushings in mounting bracket. The angled ends of clips must point inward.
- Press spring clip with roller for Tiptronic position into mount on mounting bracket as far as it will go.
- Shift selector lever into position "2."
- Place locking lever in mounting bracket and make sure that it engages properly at both mounts.
- Check operation of locking lever. With selector lever in position "P" locking lever should engage detent and make it impossible to change gear.
- Move selector lever into Tiptronic position.
- Place frame on mounting bracket (ribbed side upward) and install stop buffer in cable lever.
- Install selector mechanism.

Disassembling And Assembling Selector Lever
- Remove selector lever mechanism.
- Remove selector lever.

Disassembling





- Drive out mounting pin for selector lever using drift.
- Lift pull rod and slide selector gate out of selector lever together with Tiptronic spring mechanism.
- Release spring, then remove pull rod and spring from selector lever.
- Pry gate cover off on both sides.





- Carefully pry out springs -1- and -2- and press piece (city. 3) for Tiptronic springs using screwdriver (arrow).

Assembling





- Install guides -C- onto stop so that narrower part faces pull rod.
- Place spring -B- onto pull rod -A-.
- Install pull rod and spring in selector lever.
Installation position: rounded corner (arrow) points in direction of travel
- Make sure pull rod slides freely on two guides -C- on selector lever.

Assemble Tiptronic springs as follows
- Press in gate cover.





- Install short spring -1- and two long springs -2- with press pieces (Qty. 3) into gate by hand.
- Install Tiptronic spring system with MoS2 grease Molykote
- Press in second gate cover.





- Lift pull rod -D- and slide selector gate -B- with Tiptronic spring into selector lever-A-.
- Drive in mounting pin -C- using drift.
- To secure pin, make two new punch marks (arrows) at 90° to existing ones.
The mounting pin must not have more than 4 punch marks.
- Install selector lever.
