VAG 1551 Scan Tool, connecting and selecting function
The following warning lights are lit when VAG 1551 is connected and communication is established with the ABS control module -J104-.
- ABS or ABS/EDL warning light -K47-
- TCS (ASR) traction control indicator light -K86- (only vehicles equipped with TCS)
- Warning light for brake system -K118-

Note:
- The ABS function is switched off in the control module during the On Board Diagnostic (OBD).
- The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory can be erased after successful checking and repair of malfunctions.





- Locate Data Link Connector (DLC) below instrument panel on left side.
- With ignition switched off, connect VAG 1551 with adapter cable VAG 1551/3.

1) Is displayed alternately
If the display remains blank the Data Link Connector (DLC) must be checked.





Note:
- Depending on the program, additional operating information can be printed out by pressing the HELP button of VAG 1551.
- The button is used to advance within the scan tool program sequence.
- The PRINT button is used for switching the printer on (indicator lamp in button lights up).

- Switch ignition on.
- Switch on printer with the Print button.
- Press button -1- for "Rapid data transfer" operating mode.

- Press buttons -0- and -3- to insert "Brake electronics" address word 03.





Indicated on display

- Press -Q- button to confirm input.

Note: Three warning tones are audible during the check of the control module identification.





ABS control module identification (example) is displayed.

Display shows (example):
- The control module part number (8E0 614 111 R)
- The system designation (ABS/TCS 5.3 Front)
- The control module version number (e.g. D01)
First number: Control module hardware status
Second number: Control module software status
- Code (00064) is only required for vehicles with TCS refer to "Coding control module".
- Workshop code WSC XXXXX must be entered in VAG 1551 otherwise "coding" cannot be performed. The workshop code is only required for vehicles with TCS.

If the control module identification does not appear, press buttons -0- and -1- to input "Check control module version" address word 01.
- Press -4 button.

Note: A list of the possible functions is printed out after pressing the HELP button.

If one of the following messages appears on the display, the possible causes of the malfunction can be printed out by pressing the HELP button.





A possible cause is the fuse for control module S 7





The ignition must be switched on!.





Control module identification influenced during checking (possible influence from external sources?)

- Check VAG 1551 or VAG 1551/3 adapter cable.
Also check for battery positive voltage (b+) supply and check for proper Ground (GND) connection near ABS control module -J104-, Electrical test.
- After repairing possible causes of malfunction, again insert for "Brake electronics" address word 03 and press -0- button to confirm input.
