With Manufacturer's Scan Tool (VAG)

NOTE: This is the only information provided by the manufacturer to Read and Erase trouble codes.


Check DTC memory of all control modules. Refer to "Scan Tool Testing" Testing and Inspection

DTC memory of Engine Control Module (ECM), checking (scan tool function 02) and erasing (scan tool function 05)

When DTC memory is erased, the Engine Control Module (ECM) forgets all oxygen sensor and boost pressure adaptation values. Depending on vehicle's mileage, this can cause substantial problems with running characteristics.

If this occurs:
- Perform idle test. Testing and Inspection
- Perform a longer road test, until the problems with running characteristics are eliminated.

Special tools and equipment
- VAG1551 Scan Tool (or VAG1552 mobile scan tool) with VAG 1551/3 cable

Work procedure


NOTE: All functions previously performed with the VAG 1551/1552 can also be performed using the new VAS5051 tester.


- Connect VAG 1551 scan tool (VAG1552). Start engine and select the Engine Control Module (ECM) using address word 01 (connecting scan tool and selecting ECM). Refer to "VAG 1551 Scan Tool" [1][2][3][4][5]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool

Only if engine does not start:
- Operate starter for approx. 6 seconds. Do not switch ignition off afterward.
- Press -Print- button to turn on Scan Tool (ST) printer. Indicator lamp in button must light up.

- Operate scan tool according to indications on display:
- Press buttons -0- and -2- to select "Check DTC Memory" function 02. Press -Q- button to confirm input.

Number of stored DTCs or "No DTC recognized" will be indicated on display.


X DTC recognized


If no DTCs are stored:
- Press -> button.

If one or more DTCs are stored:
The stored malfunctions are displayed and printed out one after the other.

- Ground (GND) connections between engine and chassis must be OK.

After stored malfunctions have been printed out, display indicates:

- Press buttons -0- and -5- to select "Erase DTC Memory" function 05. Press -Q- button to confirm input.

Rapid data transfer ->
DTC Memory is erased!


NOTE: If ignition was switched off between the steps "Check DTC memory" and "Erase DTC memory", DTC memory will not be erased.


- Press -> button.
