Axle Flange Shaft Oil Seals, Replacing (Transmission Installed)
- Observe general repair instructions.

Special Tools





- VW 771 Slide hammer
- VW 771/37 Puller hooks





- 3106 Drift

Removing
- Before replacing left-side oil seal:
- Remove axle shaft. Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
- Before replacing right-side oil seal:
- Turn steering to right onto full lock stop.
- Remove right inner constant velocity joint protective cover from engine, if installed.
- Disconnect axle shaft from flange shaft.
- Tie up drive shaft as high as possible. Do not damage paint on drive shaft.
- Place drip tray underneath.





- Remove flange shaft cone-head bolt.
- Remove flange shaft with spring.





- Pull out seal.

Notes:
- Do not damage sleeve, otherwise leaks Will occur.
- Replace sleeve if damaged. Refer to Case, M/T.

Installing





- Drive seal evenly into sleeve onto stop.
- Fill space between sealing lips with MoS2 grease.
- Insert axle shaft.
- Install cone-head bolt into flange shaft threaded piece.
- Install left-hand drive shaft or attach right-hand drive shaft to flange shaft.
- If removed, install protective cover for right inner constant velocity joint.
- Top up transmission oil.
