Fuel Pressure Regulator - Checking

Group: 24

Number: 94-09

Date: Nov. 30, 1994

Subject:
Fuel Pressure Regulator, Checking

Model(s):
Golf III / Jetta III / Cabrio
2.0 liter (engine code ABA) from 1993 m.y.

The fuel pressure test port on the fuel rail has been eliminated in production from 08.94, and is not installed on some earlier vehicles as well. This bulletin covers an alternative fuel pressure test procedure for vehicles without the test port.

The following Repair Manual pages are new and will be integrated into the next Repair Manual update.

Intake manifold, lower, disassembling/assembling

^ Components marked with an asterisk (*) are checked by the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) program

^ Components marked with a double asterisk (**) are checked during the Output Diagnostic Test Mode

^ Hose connections are secured with screw-type or locking clamps. Replace all clamps with screw-type clamps

^ At least 11.5 V is required for satisfactory function of electrical component

CAUTION
Do not use sealing or lubricating compounds that contain silicone. Traces of silicone particles entering the engine are not burned in the engine and can damage the oxygen sensor probe.

Injector Mounting And Components:

1 - Retaining clip
^ Check for proper fit
2 - Fuel Pressure Regulator
3 - 0-ring
^ Always replace
4 - Fuel Injectors (N30-N33)*/**
^ Resistance: 14 to 21.5 Ohms
5 - Intake manifold, lower
6 - 10 Nm (7ft lb)
7 - Fuel rail
^ Fuel pressure test port and cap screw plug discontinued for 1995 m.y.

Fuel Pressure Regulator and residual pressure, checking

Vehicles from 08.94 (without fuel pressure test port on fuel rail)

^ Fuel Pump delivery quantity OK

WARNING!
Fire hazard! To prevent fuel spray when loosening connecting points, place rags around respective connection.

Fuel Pressure Test Connection:

- Disconnect fuel supply line -1- from fuel rail.

- Connect VAG 1318 gauge -3- to "T" adapter using VAG 1318/10 adapter.

- Connect "T" adapter to fuel rail using short piece of hose -A-, and secure
with hose clamps.

Note:
Hose connection is on fuel rail, not on Fuel Pressure Regulator -2-.

CAUTION
Gauge valve lever must be closed. Lever must be at right angle to direction of flow -arrow-.

- Start engine and let engine idle.

- Measure fuel pressure.

^ Specified value: approx. 3 bar (43 psi).

- Switch ignition OFF.

- Check for leaks and residual pressure by watching for pressure drop on gauge. After 10 minutes, at least 2 bar (29 psi) pressure must still remain.

If NO:

- Start engine and let idle.

- After pressure builds up, switch ignition off and simultaneously clamp return hose (hose has arrow pointing away from fuel rail).

- Watch whether pressure drops on gauge.

If NO:

- Replace Fuel Pressure Regulator.

If pressure drops again:

- Check Fuel Pump check valve

- Check fuel lines, 0-rings on fuel rail and Fuel Injectors for leaks.

WARNING!
Before disconnecting the gauge, hold a container near the connection and reduce fuel pressure by opening the pressure gauge valve. Fire hazard!
