Subject:
"Cracking" noise when brakes are applied
Model(s):
Golf/GTI/Jetta CANADA only from 1993 m.y.
Condition
During normal driving a "cracking" sound can be heard when the brakes are applied.
In production, the PVC coating on the underside of the vehicle can come into contact with the subframe. This results in a lower than specified torque applied to the subframe mounting bolts.
Service
- Check mounting areas of subframe for excessive applications of PVC, especially between subframe and body
- if necessary, remove subframe mounting bolts -A- and -B- and clean PVC coating from contact areas of subframe and body
CAUTION
Support engine/transmission assembly if subframe mounting bolts are removed. See Repair Manual - Suspension, Wheels,
Brakes, Steering,
- Torque subframe mounting bolts -A- and -B- on both sides of subframe to 70 Nm (52 ft lb.) plus 1/4 turn (90°)
