"Cracking" noise when brakes are applied

Condition

During normal driving a "cracking" sound can be heard when the brakes are applied.

In production, the PVC coating on the underside of the vehicle can come into contact with the subframe. This results in a lower than specified torque applied to the subframe mounting bolts.

Service

- Check mounting areas of subframe for excessive applications of PVC, especially between subframe and body





- if necessary, remove subframe mounting bolts -A- and -B- and clean PVC coating from contact areas of subframe and body

CAUTION
Support engine/transmission assembly if subframe mounting bolts are removed. See Repair Manual - Suspension, Wheels,

Brakes, Steering,

- Torque subframe mounting bolts -A- and -B- on both sides of subframe to 70 Nm (52 ft lb.) plus 1/4 turn (90°)
