Replacement (Complete)

Front

NOTE:
- From m.y. 1995 the suspension strut for vehicles with Plus suspension (6 cyl.) is also installed in vehicles with Base suspension (4 cyl.).
- For this procedure, use the tools shown in the following illustrations or their equivalents.
- Directly below the component legend are the Fig. numbers. Please refer to these for information regarding removal and installation instructions.






1 Shock Absorber
- May be replaced individually
- Need not be replaced if only slight traces of oil are visible
- After replacing, align front wheels

2 Protective Sleeve

3 Bump Stop

4 Coil Spring
- Removing/installing, refer to Fig. 2
- Note color-code identification
- Outer surface of spring must not be damaged

5 Washer

6 Spring Retainer

7 Strut Bearing
- Replace complete part
- Identifying. Application and ID

8 Slotted Nut
- Tighten to: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)

WARNING: Compress coil spring before loosening nut. Refer to Fig.1.

NOTE: The tool No. VAG 1752/1, or equivalent, spring compressor may be used in place of tool No, VAG 1403, spring compressor (shown).

WARNING:
- As assembled, the coil spring is compressed and under load. Avoid personal injury by using a suitable spring compressor tool when servicing the coil spring assembly.
- If the tools shown in the image are unavailable, spring compressor US 1117 or equivalent can be used.
- Always follow the manufacturers instructions for the tool you are using
