Automatic Transmission

Proper throttle control and transmission operation depend on accurate adjustment of the throttle cable and transmission kickdown cable.

To adjust:

Automatic Trans Throttle Cable Routing:

Auto Trans Kickdown Cable Adjustment:

1. Place the transmission gear selector in PARK and set the parking brake. Loosen the adjusting nut on the transmission's operating lever and disconnect the kickdown cable from the lever.
2. Loosen the locknuts that hold the throttle cable housing to the bracket on the cylinder head cover. Make certain that the cable moves freely and that the throttle valve is fully closed.

Throttle Cable:

3. Lightly tension the throttle cable until there is no free play in the cable. Turn the locknut nearest the throttle valve until it contacts the bracket, making sure the throttle valve is still fully closed. Turn the locknut on the other side of the bracket until it contacts the bracket, then torque it to:

87 in.lbs. (10 Nm)

Auto Trans Kickdown Stop Position:

4. Connect the hooked end of the kickdown cable to the transmission operating lever. With the accelerator pedal depressed to its kickdown position (contacting the floor stop), push the transmission lever to its kickdown stop and turn the adjusting nut on the kickdown cable until there is no free play in the cable.
5. Release and depress the accelerator pedal several times to check that the cable operates smoothly and that the operating lever rests against the kickdown stop when the pedal is fully depressed.
