Camshaft: Service and Repair
EXC. 16 VALVE ENGINE
1. Remove valve cover to cylinder head attaching bolts, then the valve cover.
2. Remove timing cover and timing belt as outlined previously.
3. Remove camshaft sprocket attaching bolt and the camshaft sprocket.
4. Exc. 5-131 engine, working from front of engine, remove No. 5, No. 1 and No. 3 bearing caps.

5. Exc. 5-131 engine, diagonally loosen, then remove, No. 2 and No. 4 bearing caps, Fig. 8.

6. On 5-131 engine, diagonally loosen bearing caps No. 2 and No. 4, then remove Fig. 9.
7. On 5-131 engine, diagonally loosen bearing caps No. 1 and No. 3, then remove, Fig. 9.
8. Remove camshaft from cylinder head.
9. Lubricate bearing shells, journals and contact surface of bearing caps with engine oil.
10. Position camshaft onto bearing saddles and install new camshaft oil seal.

11. Install bearing caps, ensure caps align correctly, Fig. 10.

12. Lightly tighten No. 2 and No. 4 bearing caps diagonally, then torque all caps to 14 ft. lbs., Fig. 8.
13. Install camshaft sprocket onto camshaft and torque attaching bolt to 58 ft. lbs.
14. Align timing marks, then install timing belt, timing cover and valve cover.
