Quantum, Vanagon, Dasher, Beetle & Convertible

Quantum and Quantum Syncro


CAUTION

^ Whenever possible, tow with front wheels off ground
^ If a car with automatic transmission must be towed with the rear wheels lifted because of extensive damage, dollies are required under front wheels to avoid damage to transmission due to lack of lubrication
^ Car may be lifted in rear and moved to position for front hook-up



Front hook-up Quantum

- attach grab hooks to towing eyes
- place 4 x 4 under bumper
- position tow bar against front of 4 x 4
- attach safety chains to lower control arms

Front hook-up Quantum Syncro

Caution

^ Whenever possible, tow with front wheels off ground
^ The central and rear differential must be unlocked during towing
^ Consult owners manual for unlocking information

- Attach grab hooks to towing brackets
- Position 4 ft. long 4 x 4 under bumper
- Position tow bar against bumper
- Raise vehicle 4 inches from ground for towing
- Attach safety chains to lower control arms



Rear hook-up Quantum

- attach grab hooks to towing eyes
- place 4 x 4 under bumper
- position tow bar against front of 4 x 4
- attach safety chains to lower brackets of shock absorbers Rear hook-up Quantum Syncro

Do not tow with conventional sling type equipment.
Vanagon


CAUTION

^ Whenever possible, tow with front wheels off ground
^ If a car with automatic transmission must be towed with the front wheels lifted because of extensive damage, dollies should be used under rear wheels if towing speed will exceed 30 mph or the distance will be over 30 miles. Exceeding these limits will damage transmission due to lack of lubrication
^ Selector lever must be in "N" position when moving car with automatic transmission with rear wheels on ground



Front hook-up - All Models

- attach grab hooks under lower control arms outboard of shock absorber mounts (as shown)
- place 4 x 4 under spare tire
- place tow bar under 4 x 4
- double wrap chains on tow bar
- attach safety chains to lower control arms (as shown)




Rear hook-up - Air-cooled Models

- attach grab hooks to trailing arms
- place 4 x 4 under engine carrier to space tow bar away from heat exchangers
- attach safety chains to trailing arms

Rear hook-up - Water-cooled Models

Rear hook-up of Vanagon Diesel or Waterboxer is not recommended. Use flatbed slide-back tow truck for towing disabled vehicles to avoid damaging body parts.
Dasher


CAUTION

^ Whenever possible, tow with front wheels off ground
^ If a car with automatic transmission must be towed with the rear wheels lifted because of extensive damage, dollies are required under front wheels to avoid damage to transmission due to lack of lubrication
^ Car may be lifted in rear and moved to position for front hook-up



Front hook-up

- attach tow chains to outboard end of subframe
- place 4 x 4 with spacer blocks under stabilizer bar/frame mounts
- place tow bar against 4 x 4
- attach safety chains to lower control arms
Rear hook-up

On the Dasher Sedan/Wagon, rear hook-up can only be made with wheel-lifting towing equipment. Do not attempt rear hook-up of Dasher with sling-type towing gear
Beetle


CAUTION

Using typical sling-type towing equipment, the Beetle can only be towed with the front wheels off the ground. If extensive damage or other conditions prevent towing with the front wheels off the ground, use towing dolly



Front hook-up

- attach tow chains to torsion bar housing
- place 4 x 4 against tires with spacer blocks under inner fender side panel at spare wheel well
- place tow bar against 4 x 4
- attach safety chains to torsion bar tubes

Rear hook-up

The Beetle rear hook-up can only be made with wheel-lifting towing equipment. Do not attempt rear hook-up with sling-type towing gear
Convertible


CAUTION

Using typical sling-type equipment, the Convertible can only be towed with the front wheels off the ground. If extensive damage or other conditions prevent towing with front wheels off ground, use towing dolly



Front hook-up

- hook J-hooks around strut attachment to steering knuckle. Be sure to clear brake lines
- place 4 x 4 against tires
- place tow bar against 4 x 4
- attach safety chains to lower control arms

Rear hook-up

On the Convertible, rear hook-up can only be made with wheel-lifting towing equipment. Do not attempt rear hook-up with sling-type towing gear
