The following diagram supercedes VW Product Circular, Wiring Diagrams, 83-10, page 64.
On Rabbits built in Westmoreland, control relay is tie-wrapped to left side of steering column bracket.
On import Volkswagens, control relay is located above fuse/relay panel.
Note
Before checks or adjustments are made to the idle speed, ignition timing, or CO%, the supply hose from the intake air duct must be pinched shut. This ensures that if the valve is open, it will not affect the basic idle speed setting.
To test system operation:
- connect tachometer to engine
- clamp supply hose shut at intake boot
- start and warm engine to operating temperature
- adjust idle speed to less than 750 RPM
^ air bypass valve must "click" on
^ idle speed should increase slightly when clamp is removed from supply hose
- briefly raise idle speed
^ air bypass valve should "click" off when engine increases above 1100 RPM
If system tests OK, clamp supply hose shut and adjust idle speed to 925 +/- 75 RPM.
