Starter Motor: Service and Repair
Automatic Transaxle Models
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove starter splash cover clamp then the splash cover.
3. Disconnect electrical leads from starter solenoid.
4. Remove starter to housing attaching nuts and the starter.
5. Reverse procedure to install.
Manual Transaxle Models
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect electrical leads from starter solenoid.
3. On 1984 models, remove starter support bracket to transaxle attaching bolt.
4. On all models, remove starter to housing mounting bolts and the starter.
5. Install starter and torque mounting bolts to 11 ft. lbs. on 1984 models and 43 ft. lbs. on 1985-88 models.
6. On 1984 models, attach support bracket to starter, place two .080 inch washers and lock washers onto starter studs, then install nuts loosely.
7. On 1984 models, attach support bracket to transaxle and torque attaching bolt to 11 ft. lbs.
8. On 1984 models, torque support bracket to starter stud nuts to 4 ft. lbs. Both studs should have sufficient clearance in elongated holes of bracket to enable easy mounting. If not, enlarge bracket holes as necessary.
9. Connect solenoid electrical leads and battery cable.
