Drivers or passengers in the front seat can possibly benefit from a kit designed to raise or lower the seat belt mounting point on the B-pillar. Persons of small stature may find the shoulder belt can be moved away from contact with the neck by lowering the mounting point 50 mm.

Larger than normal persons may need the belt moved from the arm to the shoulder by raising the mounting point 50 mm..

The kit should be installed to accommodate the person who occupies a particular seat most often.

Adapter kits are available for relocating the belt mounting on most Volkswagens with 3-point restraint systems.

Adapter kit, Part No. 171 857 800 for Type 1, Rabbit, Jetta (through 1984)

A threaded plate
B shouldered bolt*
C bolt
D cap
E screw*
* shank partially reduced to 9.5 mm diameter
Work sequence

- remove seat belt mounting on B-pillar
- mount threaded plate A in desired position with bolt C
- mark B-pillar through upper and lower holes in threaded plate

- loosen threaded plate and turn 90~
- drill 10 mm (3/8 in) holes in B-pillar at marked locations
- deburr edge of holes and paint exposed bare metal surfaces
- realign threaded plate and tighten bolt to 40 N-m (29 ft.lbs.)

- install screw E with D6 locking compound and tighten until face of screw is flush with face of threaded plate
- assemble seat belt swivel with shouldered bolt B and install to threaded plate
^ tightening torque: 40 N-m (29 ft.lbs.)

Note

The belt swivel must move freely after assembly. If not, check washer arrangement.

D trim cover

F spacer

Work sequence

- remove seat belt mounting on B-pillar
- remove upper B-pillar trim

- mount threaded plate A in position with washer G and bolt C
^ tightening torque: 40 N-m (29 ft.lbs.)
- install screw E with D6 locking compound and tighten until face of screw is flush with face of threaded plate
- cut hole in trim cover D at upper or lower location
- cut opening in B-pillar trim along marking on back
- clip trim cover to B-pillar trim

- install B-pillar trim
- assemble seat belt swivel with spacer F and shouldered bolt B and install to threaded plate
^ tightening torque: 47 N-m (34 ft.lbs.)

Note

The belt swivel must move freely after assembly. If not, check washer arrangement.



Adapter kit, Part No. 321 857 800 for Dasher (1981 model) and Quantum (earlier Dashers are equipped with two belt anchorage points in production, allowing adjustment without use of an adapter)

Work sequence

- remove seat belt mounting on B-pillar
- remove lower seat belt mounting
- remove door weather seals in area of B-pillar trim

- remove B-pillar trim
- mount threaded plate A in position with washer G and bolt C
^ tightening torque: 40 N-m (29 ft.lbs.)
- install screw E with D6 locking compound and tighten until face of screw is flush with face of threaded plate

- cut opening in B-pillar trim for new trim cover (area to be cut marked on back)
- install B-pillar trim
- install trim cover D (snaps over threaded plate)
- install door weather seals

- install lower seat belt mounting
- assemble seat belt swivel with spacer F and shouldered bolt B and install to threaded plate
^ tightening torque: 40 N-m (29 ft.lbs.)

Note

The belt swivel must move freely after assembly. If not, check washer arrangement.
