When diagnosing cooling system problems the following check should be performed to assure proper functioning of the water pump:
- remove thermostat
- jam water pump impeller with a suitable screwdriver to prevent it from turning (arrow A)
- insert 6 mm allen wrenches in two of the three pulley bolts
- try to turn water pump pulley using a second screwdriver of 250 mm (10 in.) length placed between allen wrenches in pulley bolts (arrow B)
- if pulley moves, impeller is loose and impeller/ housing assembly must be replaced
- reinstall thermostat
