Valve: Adjustments
MECHANICAL
1. Start engine and allow it to idle for several minutes. (95°F).
2. Turn engine off, then remove spark plug wires and valve cover.
3. Bump starter until camshaft lobes of valves being adjusted are positioned upward.
4. Using a suitable feeler gauge, check valve clearance.
5. If measured clearance is larger or smaller than specifications, replace adjusting disc with tools US4476 and VW546 or equivalents. The dimension between valve guides has been increased on some late model engines. This revision necessitates the use of tools US-4476 and 2078 to replace adjusting disc. Engines including this modification are identified by a sticker on the valve cover. Adjusting disc thicknesses range from .118 through .167 in .002 inch increments. Adjusting disc part Nos. range from 056 109 55 through 056 109 580. Adjusting disc 056 109 55 being the .118 inch thick adjusting disc and 056 109 580 being the .167 inch thick adjusting disc.
