Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair




Removal

NOTE: The illustrations show the left-side drive flange. Removal and installation of the right-side drive flange and oil seal are identical.

- Disconnect drive axle at right side of transmission, tilt upward and suspend using wire hook
- Remove drive axle
- Pry off cover by piercing center of cover using screwdriver
- Remove circlip (A) and dished washer (B) for drive flange





- Remove drive flange together with spring
- Attach puller using two hex-head bolts (A) (M8 x 30) installed through elongated holes in puller





- Extract oil seal (A)





Installation
- Fill space between sealing lips of new oil seal with multi-purpose grease and then drive in to stop





- Heat drive flange on hot-plate to approx. 80°C (176°F)
- Install spring on drive flange and press drive flange in to stop
- Install dished washer, installation position: convex, internal diameter faces outward





- Install new circlip and press down to seat in groove

NOTE: If the spring behind the drive flange exerts too much force, special tool VW 201 should be installed to keep the flange in position while the circlip is installed.

- (A) = Threaded stud with nut, M10
- Press on new cover
- Check transmission oil level, top up to lower edge of filler hole where necessary
