Due to significant changes in fastener technology, one type of fastener frequently being used is the "self-locking" nut, which is a nut with a plastic insert or one that has been deformed so that it will not easily move once in position, thereby possibly eliminating the need for lock washers or cotter pins.

When doing maintenance work which requires the removal of such "self-locking" nuts, instructions given in the Repair Manual, usually calling for new nuts for replacement, MUST be followed. Otherwise, vibration in service could cause re-used nuts to loosen, with possible maintenance-related parts failures.

It is also good practice to replace cotter pins, lock washers and circlips, especially in connection with moving or vibration-prone fasteners. It is a MUST requirement if called for in the Repair Manual.

CAUTION

To avoid potentially serious maintenance-related failures, the VW recommended servicing instructions requiring the use of new self-locking nuts, new washers, new cotter pins or new circlips MUST always be followed to the letter, and when in doubt - use a new fastener.
