Ignition Specifications - Rabbit/Jetta/Scirocco

Ignition Specifications - Quantum

Flywheel
(cars with manual transmission)

Note:
Flywheels supplied as spare parts have TDC mark 0 only

Rabbit/Jetta/Scirocco

- when installing new flywheel, cut ignition timing mark notch into flywheel distance a to left of TDC mark 0 (see illustration)

^ a = 12 mm (0.472 inch)

Quantum

- when installing new flywheel, cut ignition timing mark notch into flywheel distance a to left of TDC mark 0 (see illustration)

^ a = 14 mm (0.551 inch)

Idle Stabilizer, Checking

^ 1 = idle stabilizer

^ 2 = Hall control unit

^ 3 = plug connectors

Note:
If engine is hard to start and stalls, check for possible problem in idle stabilization system as follows

- pull plugs 3 out of idle stabilizer 1

- check pins and sockets for corrosion and damage

- connect both plugs 3 together

- start engine

- if engine now starts and does not stall, connectors are OK: idle stabilizer is defective and must be replaced

Idle stabilization system, checking

- with plugs 3 connected to idle stabilizer 1, connect Siemens 451 or VAG 1367 tester

- set parking brake

Warning:
Make sure during following tests that no one is in front of car

Cars with manual transmission

- start engine

- run engine at idle speed

- read ignition timing on tester and note

- shift into 4th gear and release clutch slowly

^ ignition timing reading on tester must advance when rpm of engine drops below 840 rpm

- if no, replace idle stabilizer

Cars with automatic transmission

- start engine and wait until engine speed drops below 1,000 rpm

- run engine at idle speed

- read ignition timing on tester and note

- switch off A/C (if installed)

- switch on all electrical equipment, such as head light, rear window defogger etc.

- apply brake pedal

- move shift lever into gear

^ ignition timing reading on tester must advance when engine RPMs drop below 840 rpm

- if no, replace idle stabilizer
