Turbocharger: Testing and Inspection

Construction:

INSPECTION

NOTE: If the turbocharger malfunctions, replace it with an assembly.

Measurement of turbine shaft axial play
1. Secure the inlet flange face of the turbocharger turbine housing (exhaust side) on a base or table.

2. Apply the top end of the dial gauge on the lock nut on the compressor side (intake side). Make sure the rotor shaft and the terminal of the dial gauge are placed in line.

NOTE: If the terminal of the dial gauge does not completely attach the top surface of the lock nut, slightly move the gauge sideways as shown in the illustration.

3. Alternately push the compressor blade and turbine wheel blade, and measure the axial play.

Measurement of turbine shaft radial play
1. Secure the inlet flange face of the turbocharger turbine housing (exhaust side) on a base or table.

2. Insert the top of the dial gauge from the center housing oil outlet, and apply it to the rotor shaft. Make sure the diameter of the oil outlet and the terminal of the dial gauge do not interfere.
3. Rotate the rotor several revolutions with your fingers, and make sure the needle of the dial gauge moves slightly.
4. With your fingers, pinch the lock nut of the rotor and turbine wheel nose, and move them simultaneously to measure the radial play. Check both sides at the same time.

Measurement of actuator set pressure
1. Secure the inlet flange face of the turbocharger turbine housing (exhaust side) on a base or table.

2. Remove the hose of the actuator side, and connect the outer air hose to the actuator fitting.

3. Apply a dial gauge to the actuator rod end. Make sure the gauge terminal and rod end are placed in line.

4. Make the rod end (waist gate valve) stroke about 4 mm (0.16 in) using outer air, and return to the original position.

5. Set the measurement of the dial gauge to 0, and check the pressure with 0.38 mm (0.0150 in) stroked. In this case, lightly tap the actuator bracket to make the rod end stroke as shown in the illustration.
