2AR-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P2014,P2016,P2017: Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor / Switch Circuit (Bank 1)

DESCRIPTION

The tumble control valve position sensor is a non-contact type sensor.

The position sensor measures the opening angle of the tumble control valve. The sensor is reliable and accurate, as it is electrically controlled by Hall elements.

HINT
After confirming DTC P2014, P2016 or P2017, use the Techstream to confirm the IAC Sensor Voltage (tumble control valve position sensor output voltage). Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / IAC Sensor Voltage.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The ECM IAC1 terminal voltage increases in correlation with the opening angle of the tumble control valve. When the tumble control valve is fully closed, approximately 0.8 V is applied to the IAC1 terminal. When the tumble control valve is fully open, approximately 3.6 V is applied to the IAC1 terminal.

When the output voltage of the IAC1 terminal deviates from the standard range, the ECM determines that a malfunction has occurred in the position sensor and stores a DTC. Refer to ECM Power Source Circuit Component Tests and General Diagnostics.

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.

3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure) Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.

6. Allow 0.5 seconds or more to elapse [A].

7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All readiness.

8. Input the DTC: P2014, P2016 or P2017.

9. Check the DTC judgment result [B].

HINT
If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.

10. If the test result is UNKNOWN, enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes / Pending.

11. Read Pending DTCs.

HINT
If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

12. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

HINT
* If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
* If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

WIRING DIAGRAM

Refer to DTC P2004 P2004.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT
* If different DTCs that are related to a different system are output simultaneously while terminal EIA1 is used as a ground terminal, terminal EIA1 may be open.
* Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.

PROCEDURE

1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE TUMBLE CONTROL VALVE)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.

(c) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the IAC Duty Ratio / All Data / IAC Sensor Voltage.

(d) Check the output voltage of IAC Sensor Voltage while changing Control the IAC Duty Ratio from -100 to 100% (or from 100 to -100%) using the Techstream.

OK:

The voltage output of IAC Sensor Voltage remains between 0.2 and 4.8 V while Control the IAC Duty Ratio is changed from -100 to 100% (or from 100 to -100%).

HINT:

NG -- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (INTAKE AIR CONTROL VALVE ACTUATOR - ECM)
OK -- Continue to next step.

2. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P2014, P2016 AND/OR P2017)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.

(c) Clear the DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.

(e) Read the DTCs.

Result:

B -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS Check for Intermittent Problems

A -- REPLACE ECM Removal

3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (INTAKE AIR CONTROL VALVE ACTUATOR - ECM)

(a) Disconnect the ECM connector.

(b) Disconnect the intake air control valve actuator connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Resistance (Check for Open):

Standard Resistance (Check for Short):

(d) Reconnect the intake air control valve actuator connector.

(e) Reconnect the ECM connector.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.

4. INSPECT ECM (VCIA VOLTAGE)

(a) Disconnect the intake air control valve actuator connector.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Voltage:

(d) Reconnect the intake air control valve actuator connector.

NG -- REPLACE ECM Removal
OK -- Continue to next step.

5. REPLACE INTAKE AIR CONTROL VALVE ACTUATOR (FOR TUMBLE CONTROL VALVE)
