2AR-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P2004,P2006: Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Open (Bank 1)

DESCRIPTION

The tumble control valve is built into the intake manifold. The tumble control valve is composed of a position sensor and a DC motor. The DC motor opens and closes the tumble control valve in response to signals from the ECM. The position sensor detects the opening angle of the tumble control valve.

When the tumble control valve is closed, the intake air tumble flow intensifies and negative pressure is generated between the tumble control valve and intake valve which atomizes the fuel. Combustion is enhanced and exhaust gas emissions are reduced at low temperatures.

HINT
After confirming DTCs P2004 and/or P2006, use the Techstream to confirm the Intake Air Control Position while performing Control the IAC Duty Ratio of the Active Test.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

When the ECM has requested a tumble control valve close operation but the actual tumble control valve opening angle is 17° or more for 10 seconds, DTC P2004 is output. When the ECM has requested a tumble control valve open operation but the actual tumble control valve opening angle is less than 35° for 10 seconds, DTC P2006 is output.

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

2. Turn the ignition switch to ON [A].

3. Turn the Techstream on.

4. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure) Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Coolant Temp.

HINT
* Check DTC P2004 at a coolant temperature of 30°C or less.
* Check DTC P2006 at a coolant temperature of 80°C or higher.

6. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

7. Turn the ignition switch to ON, wait approximately 10 seconds, and then turn the ignition switch off. Repeat this procedure 3 times [B].

8. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.

9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All readiness.

10. Input the DTC: P2004 or P2006.

11. Check the DTC judgment result [C].

HINT
If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.

12. If the test result is UNKNOWN, enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Code / Pending.

13. Read Pending DTCs.

HINT
If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

14. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

HINT
* If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
* If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT
Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.

PROCEDURE

1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P2004 OR P2006)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Turn the Techstream on.

(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.

(e) Read DTCs.

Result:

HINT
If any DTCs other than P2004 or P2006 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

B -- GO TO DTC CHART SFI System
A -- Continue to next step.

2. INSPECT INTAKE AIR CONTROL VALVE ACTUATOR (FOR TUMBLE CONTROL VALVE)

(a) Inspect the intake air control valve actuator Testing and Inspection.

NG -- REPLACE INTAKE AIR CONTROL VALVE ACTUATOR Removal
OK -- Continue to next step.

3. INSPECT INTAKE MANIFOLD (TUMBLE CONTROL VALVE OPERATION)

(a) Inspect the intake manifold Intake System.

NG -- REPLACE INTAKE MANIFOLD Removal
OK -- Continue to next step.

4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ECM - INTAKE AIR CONTROL VALVE ACTUATOR)

(a) Disconnect the ECM connector.

(b) Disconnect the intake air control valve actuator connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Resistance (Check for Open):

Standard Resistance (Check for Short):

(d) Reconnect the ECM connector.

(e) Reconnect the intake air control valve actuator connector.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.

5. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P2004 OR P2006)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Turn the Techstream on.

(d) Clear the DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

(e) Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern.

(f) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes / Pending.

(g) Read the DTCs.

Result:
