Engine Control System - SFI System (to 12/2010)

2GR-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0705: Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction (PRNDL Input)
P0705 - Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction (PRNDL Input)

DESCRIPTION

The park / neutral position switch detects the shift lever position and sends signals to the ECM.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

These DTCs indicate a problem with the park/neutral position switch and the wire harness in the park/neutral position switch circuit.

The park/neutral position switch detects the shift lever position and sends a signal to the ECM.

For security, the park/neutral position switch detects the shift lever position so that the engine can be started only when the shift lever is in the P or N position.

The park/neutral position switch sends a signal to the ECM according to the shift position (P, R, N or D). The ECM determines that there is a problem with the switch or related parts if it receives more than 1 position signal simultaneously. The ECM will turn on the MIL and store the DTC.

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.

3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure) DTC Check / Clear (to 12/2010).

4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for 30 seconds.

5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].

6. Wait 10 minutes or more.

7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes / Pending.

8. Read the pending DTCs [B].

9. If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

HINT
If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.

11. Input the DTC: P0705.

12. Check the DTC judgment result [B].

HINT
* If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
* If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
* If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN, perform step [A] again.

13. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.

14. Check the judgment result.

HINT
* If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
* If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.

15. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs DTC Check / Clear (to 12/2010).

HINT
* If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
* If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

NOTICE:
Inspect the fuses for circuits related to this system before performing the following inspection procedure.

HINT
Using the Techstream to read the Data List allows the values or states of switches, sensors, actuators and other items to be read without removing any parts. This non-intrusive inspection can be very useful because intermittent conditions or signals may by discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Reading the Data List information early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time.

1. DATA LIST

NOTICE:
In the table below, the values listed under "Normal Condition" are reference values. Do not depend solely on these reference values when deciding whether a part is faulty or not.

(a) Warm up the engine.

(b) Turn the ignition switch off.

(c) Connect Techstream to the DLC3.

(d) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(e) Turn the Techstream on.

(f) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data.

(g) Read the values displayed on the Techstream.

PROCEDURE

1. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (BATTERY - PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH)

(a) Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard voltage:

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.

2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH - ST RELAY)

(a) Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.

(b) Remove the ST relay from the engine room relay block.
