Engine Control System - SFI System (from 12/2010)

2GR-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0505: Idle Control System Malfunction
P0505 - Idle Control System Malfunction

DESCRIPTION

The idle speed is controlled by the Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS). The ETCS is comprised of: 1) one valve type throttle body; 2) the throttle actuator, which operates the throttle valve; 3) the throttle position sensor, which detects the opening angle of the throttle valve; 4) the accelerator pedal position sensor, which detects the accelerator pedal position; 5) the ECM, which controls the ETCS. Based on the target idle speed, the ECM controls the throttle actuator to provide the proper throttle valve opening angle.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The ECM monitors the idling speed and idling air flow volume to conduct Idle Speed Control (ISC). The ECM determines that the ISC system is malfunctioning if either of the following conditions is met:

- The difference between the target engine idling speed and actual engine idling speed exceeds the threshold and the IAC flow rate learned value is stuck at the upper or lower limit for 5 seconds or more.

- The difference between the target engine idling speed and actual engine idling speed exceeds the threshold 5 times or more and the vehicle is driven in a Go [6.25 mph (10 km/h) or more] and Stop pattern 5 times or more, and then the system determines that the IAC flow rate learned value is stuck at the upper or lower limit, or that the IAC flow rate learned value has been changed by an amount that exceeds the threshold.

TYPICAL ENABLING CONDITIONS

TYPICAL MALFUNCTION THRESHOLDS

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.

3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure) DTC Check / Clear (from 12/2010).

4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for 30 seconds.

5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].

6. Start the engine and warm it up (until the engine coolant temperature is 75°C (167°F) or more) with all the accessories switched off [B].

7. Idle the engine for 10 minute or more [C].

8. Accelerate the vehicle to 6.25 mph/h (10 km/h) or more, and then idle the engine [D].

9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes / Pending.

10. Read the pending DTCs [E].

11. If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

HINT
If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

12. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.

13. Input the DTC: P0505.

14. Check the DTC judgment result.

HINT
* If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
* If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
* If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN, repeat step [D] 4 times, allowing 20 seconds or more between each repetition.

15. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.

16. Check the judgment result [F].

HINT
* If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
* If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.

17. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs DTC Check / Clear (from 12/2010).

HINT
* If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
* If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT
* The following conditions may also cause DTC P0505 to be set:
(1) The floor carpet overlapping slightly onto the accelerator pedal, causing the accelerator pedal to be slightly depressed and therefore the throttle valve position to be slightly open.
(2) The accelerator pedal being not fully released.
* Read freeze frame data using Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction Freeze Frame Data.

PROCEDURE

1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0505)

(a) Connect Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Turn the Techstream on.

(d) Enter the following the menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.

(e) Read the DTCs.

Result:

HINT
If any DTCs other than P0505 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

B -- GO TO DTC CHART Diagnostic Trouble Code Chart (from 12/2010)
A -- Continue to next step.

2. CHECK PCV HOSE (HOSE CONNECTIONS)

(a) Check the PCV hose conditions.

OK:

PCV hose is connected correctly and is not damaged.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE PCV HOSE
OK -- Continue to next step.

3. CHECK AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM

(a) Check the air induction system for vacuum leakage.

OK:

No leakage from the air induction system.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM
OK -- Continue to next step.

4. CHECK THROTTLE BODY (VISUALLY CHECK THROTTLE VALVE)

(a) Check for contamination between the throttle valve and the housing. If necessary, clean the throttle body. And check that the throttle valve moves smoothly.

OK:

Throttle valve is not contaminated with foreign objects and moves smoothly.

NG -- REPLACE THROTTLE BODY Removal (from 12/2010)

OK -- REPLACE ECM Removal (from 12/2010)
